Phil,
Nice work. Great shots for comparison. The 993 is SOOOOO mush better looking. Your car is just beautiful, a real gem. 997S is very, very, very muchy improved over that thing (996) they called a 911. Still has some design flaws like the Corvette front bumper and taillights being to high. And... no reflector bar!!!!!

For a Porsche nut, it was no sacrifice...it was a pleasure!

Dave,
Great Post, sincere thanks for taking the time to take the photos in addition to a verbal passdown. They really add a nice touch to your review. Not too much I can add that hasn't already been said ... the 993 will be highly desired model for many years to come. Unlike the 99 ... well, you know. And I am happy to hear the engine/gearbox/ride is worthy of the Porsche name.

Phil - Thanks for the most critical, well written summary I have seen - including Autoweek, Excellance and the local paper. I don't know what you do - but you may have missed you calling as an automotive writter!

That body style is close to what it will take for me to consider buying a new Porsche.
I still find some problem with the puffed up rear end. Way to high. The car looks like it is jacked up. Definately needs the reflector. Still must get used to the dash. So different from the Real Deal, Race Car Porsche. Perhaps with time.
There is an article in the Aug addition of Car and Driver about the 997. They give an Ok, but.... Nice read.

I got to tell you guys, the 997 is close to the real deal, at least by its looks. I just saw one at a local dealer, Jim Ellis. The car belongs to PCNA. Not for sale. It has nice lines. The back does not look quite so jacked up in person. The interior, well, its not bad. I think I could get used to it. The front brakes, WOW, talk about Big Reds, these are Giant Yellows. One can definately see it's ancestry. Kudos to Porsche for moving in a direction, I believe, many of us will/are be very happy to see. If you're local, check it out.

It looks like the rear end of 993 still remains to be unbeatable! But sleeker front end, great looking side of 997, the more ergonomic interior, the more powerful engine, transmission, modern electronic, todays technology at every component of 997 leaves (let's face the fact) our lovely 993 behind...even kind of makes it look out-dated ....well...but I bet 997 still doesn't smell like 993!

Thanks for sharing! I agree with most here, namely:
- wheels are awful but easily fixed
- rear end is too high, as with the 996
- steering wheel has to go
- the 997 needs more of a rear arch bulge, a la 993
