Default OT - Checkered Floors for Garage

I've longed admired some of the Rennlisters' garage floors, especially the ones that are checkered with Black & White. I'm in the process of renovating my garage at the moment, and I would like to have this type of floor. I hate to ask a stupid question, but how do you guys do this? Is it fairly simple, or is there a trick to it?

Also, on the back of the Performance Products' catalog they have a checkered mat by Race Deck. One can assemble them to fit a checkered pattern (snap together like a slot car set). They look pretty nice. Anyone have any experience with this brand?

It should be obvious that Home Improvements are not my forte, so any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, all.

Everybody bitches about jackstands going through them though - just remove a section for each jackstand...

How do you remove a section after the floor is entirely installed? It seems to me that the tiles are interlocking.

Wouldn't a "coaster" of sorts be a better option?

Looking at the Race Deck website, it looks as if that may be the easiest way to go.

Hi Rich. Mine is AZ Rock Vinyl Composite Tile, applied with epoxy cement. Was applied by professional installers.

Hey Lee,

Thanks for the photo. If you don't mind, how much did it cost to have that installed? It looks terrific. Thanks, Lee.

I just went the cheap route and got the industrial tile at Home Depot. total cost for 2-car garage was $300 installed myself. It was about a 1 day installl. Its not as strong as racedeck, etc. But if one tile goes bad its $0.70 to put a new one in there. Cleans easy and cheap to repair. Can't beat that.

Kerrysatx,

It's quite a bit more than the .70 per tile. I'm looking at the Performance Products' catalog at the price is $3.95 each.

Rich, it cost $1800 for tiles and labor, for 400 square foot garage, and steps. The stuff is pretty bullett proof. At the place where I bought it, they had the same stuff down in the warehouse, with trucks and forklifts driving over it for years, and it held up amazingly well. Figure with my limited use, I should get a few hundred years out of the stuff. -Lee.

Bokonon,

Hmm, that sounds like another decent option. Was it easy to make sure that the tiles fit properly? Or, do the tiles fit most standard size garages? Thanks.

They are large enough so that when one is removed, you have a bit of leway where you can put the jackstand. A friend of mine does it with no problem. All you do is cut the female loops off the pieces you frequently remove. Or, a good alternative that I've seen done, as Mark pointed out, is using a "coaster" under the jackstand.

It's expensive stuff though and the tiles Terry used from Home Depot look very nice. Again, the "coaster" method would I'm sure be necessary when jacking on the Home Depot tiles.
