Post Starting problems....

I'm having problems starting the car in the mornings (well, anytime to be honest).

All the ignition lights come on but there does not seem to be enough 'charge' to start the car. It jump starts immeadiately with no problems and I dont think its a issue with the alternator...is it just the battery not holing any charge or could it be somthing more sinister?

Its getting to be a pain in the ****, but I dont want to change the battery if it could be a different problem.

I've not left any lights on!

Any ideas?

1st thing, clean the contacts between the car and the battery. These can get corroded and provide the exact symptoms you describe.

Cheers guys,

I removed the battery and it has a sticker on it saying 're-charge by March 2000'. I guess this is for the supplier if the battery was not sold and sat on a shelf for a while....so it must be 3 years old or so. The car only did 3k miles last year so I know its not been used a great deal...

Anyhow, the new battery in place now so only time will tell. If it drains I have a problem!

Silver Bullet, that thread sounded like the exact same problem. Fingers crossed anyway.

Thanks again,

I use one of those trickle chargers for my car when I know I won't drive it for more than a week or two, I got mine from Griots Garage. Just plug it into the cigarette lighter. Used it all winter and the car started right up every time!

jhb,

That may be worthwhile investing in (and a set of jump leads!). The car started strongly this morning, only had to breathe on the key! Hopefully it was the battery....simple as that.

Ross - hi. You've only just bought your car haven't you? - i'd take it back to the vendor and get them to pay for a new battery (did you get a warranty period?).

Ajit.

Hi Ajit,

Hope you are well, going to the meet on the 25th?

I've only had it for 5 weeks or so now. I did think about that but figured it wouldn't be covered as its sure to be deemed consumable a la Tyres etc.

I should have checked but just wanted to nip the problem in the bud.

Hopefully see you soon,
