96 993 cab vs. 89 cab
hi all,
just returned from driving a terrific '96 cab...what a beautiful car, especially from the rear.
anyway, wanted to ask/share a few thoughts w/ other p-car owners to get opinion as i was thinking about trading for it, but now not so sure.
1) clutch feels heavier than '89...is that normal? still very comfortable, not definitely stiffer.
2) power asst steering felt very sedan like...not as direct feel.
3) car didn't feel quite as solid(is that right...or perhaps it was just the car i drove?
4) definitely much more power, especially at the lower rpm, but 5th/6th gear seem a bit unnecessary.
5) is it too redundant to try to keep both? or should i try for a coupe as a 2nd? and what's the best reason to give wife for owning 2 porsches?

Hi Patrick,
I'm no expert, but here goes with my opinions
I tried an 87 wide bodied supersport, and it had a switch for a clutch. The wife hated it.
In comparidon my 94 993 has a much softer clutch. I also drove a 964, and to be honest it felt just the same as the 993 to me.
Hmm. Mine is very direct - almost twitchy.
Maybe they had dialed in a lot of toe-in or something to suit the previous owner.
Can't really comment there. its a 'feeling', so its your own perception. Mine feels rock solid to me.
I agree, 4th will see you well over 100mph, so for road use, they become motorway cruising gears. Get on the track though, and 5th gets used. Either that or go to Europe and check out the rev limiter in 6th !!
Nah, mate, buy as many as you like, its your money.
As for the reason ot the wife, how about "because you can !"
I used to try to justify things. Now I have a simple checklist :
1) do I want it,
2) can I afford it,
3) hav I got room for it
Sometimes I add a fourth -
4) how can I get it in the garage without the wife seeing
Life's too short, and as long as it doesn't screw other longer term plans (like holidays or house moves) buy it while you can. After all, you can always sell it again, even if you do loose a little money for the experience.
Cheers,
John (4 cars, 8 bikes, and an understanding wife ....)
