Default 993 cabriolet soft top query

I’m looking at a 993. Soft tops has to manually be opened and closed. Owner says

The system was removed and converted to manual operation. It is a normal modification because of all the issues the top system can have.

Seems an extreme thing to do. You wouldn’t be able to open or close while in the car/on the move.
has anyone else seen this done?
what would it cost to have it put back?

Even in electrical mode, you can't close the 993 top, while moving, like the modern 911s.........

The 993 cab tops are a bit high maintenance......latch motors, micro switches, top side motors, cables, elastics, etc...

Its mostly because of the costs that people have gone manual....less stuff to break......but you still have to deal with latch motors going out, etc...and replacing the canvas when its time.....

And Cab canvas tops, on average last 8 years or so, depending on which web info search you use on that data.....

And you have to be on a level surface to insure top closes correctly......or something may get off kilter.....

I have spent $27K on maintenance/repairs/tires over 25 years and 78K miles with my cab, which is actually good, but around $6K of that expense has been on top costs......almost 1/4 of all costs.....

Sometimes, I wish I had bought a coupe - especially with the crazy values now) but hard to beat top down motoring in a 993.......

No, kept it stock.....but need to replace a latch motor (LM) where the internal LM micro switch is not tripping, due to internal LM broken cog wheel, and I have a top open warning light that actuates.......

I disable or switch off with the console warning light switch, upon starting the car.......

Will get around to replacing LM - easy job - half hour, as it will be my third one for the passenger side, driver's side has already had 3.........as it just started happening on passenger side......

I have 2 rebuilt motors I purchased in reserve for $350 total - one for each side, when LA Dismantlers went out of business and had a sale. New ones are $1500 each these days......

Vertex in Miami used to rebuild them for $200 each years ago and may not do this any longer......last time I checked it was $500 each to rebuild...which was still a deal.....
