Default Which Power Steering Fluid?

I’m in the process of wrapping up my P/S rack R&R. It has had a consistent slow leak for the past 2 years so finally I removed the rack and sent it for re-seal. It is now all button up but I’m a bit confused as to which fluid to run. My 95 993 is a very early build, 04/1994 to be exact. Pentosin seems to be the favorite on RL, but then most 993s aren’t the early build. The manual states Dex II. Would Dex III (all I could find) work or better to go with Pentosin? Thanks for your input.

Researched extensively 6 months ago.

Pentosin CHF 202. Some people use the older Pentosin 11S but largely everyone has switched to 202 and is fully compatible and recommended. Believe there are service bulletins which recommend it, so I would go with the superseded information.

Yup, Pentosin CHF 202 is the right stuff. Just swapped my car over from 11S to CHF 202.

Not sure if you have Autozones in your area but in mine they had it on the shelf.

I always thought it was weird they specified ATF first, then eventually the Hydraulic fluid/ PS fluid.

Another vote for CHF 202, when I switched to electric PS in my '97 track car, flushed / refilled with 202 and has worked fine for years.

This is great. It’s about $25 on Amazon and my local AZ has these on the shelf for about $29. Thanks again gents!

100% certain. It's printed right on the can that Pentosin CHF 202 is compatible with the older 11S but not CHF 7.1

Also, attached is the service bulletin from when the factory switched from ATF to 11S (before 202 was developed) . It also states that you can put 11S in a system that previously had ATF in there.

I'm assuming ATF was the standard before more specific PS fluids were developed in the 90's. Per the TSB, the factory switched fluids during 993 production for the following reason:

"Pentosin has been selected for use because of better and more uniform viscosity behavior at low ambient temperatures."

Pretty sure my dads old '86 Audi 5000s used 11s for the power steering, so it was available back then. Or at least the Audi equivalent at the time.

Interesting! I'm going to kick-start a similar conversation over in the 928 forum. My 928S4 uses ATF in the steering system and would be wonderful if I could get the whole stable on the same diet.

11S wasn't produced until 1991. You're likely thinking of CHF 7.1
