All,

Can anyone recomend a good OBD II scan tool for my 1995 993 ?? I would also potentially like to use it (if possible) on a 2000 Nissan XTerra.

Thanks for any recommendations.

All the OBD2 scan tool that I know of (ones that uses a laptop or a hand held) will not work with your OBD1 993, but will certainly work with your Nissan if you have the right OBD port adaptor. Not sure if the Nissan uses the same ISO OBD port as the German cars.

I thought all post 1994 cars sold in the US were required to use OBD2. At the very least I thought this was a California mandate (where the car was originally sold). Was this an incorrect assumption?

Porsche went to OBD2 in MY 1996, as required by law.

There were no OBD2 993s prior to that.

I agree with Robin. if you open your engine lid and read the engie sticker rthere, as I remeber it sez specifically engine electronics are OBD II.

Shop manual has some description of downloading fault codes stored in the computer without using a scan tool. Buy the shop manual and look in "Diagnosis" volume.

You can read the codes on an OBD I 993 without a code reader.

1. Turn on the ignition, but don't start the engine.
2. Depress the accelerator pedal fully for about 3 seconds.
3. The CEL will illuminate steady, and then begin to flash.
4. Ease off the accelerator pedal, and read the codes.

Each code consists of four digits, such as 1121. Each digit will be a number of flashes followed by a pause. Example: Flash pause flash flash flash flash flash = 1500, which means "no fault found". There may be multiple codes. You should have a single flash then a pause, then a single or a double flash. If the flash is double then the fault is intermittent (loose contact) otherwise the fault is constant. And then the following flashes;

19 Speed signal <- Speedometer
21 Hot Film Mass Air flow sensor
22 Oxygen Sensor (Signal)

Works with Porsche OBD1 and OBD2.
If your OBD1 car does not have the trapezoidal connector and has the round one, I believe he has an adapter.

On my 1995 US version, the scantool software and hardware works. There are challenges if you have the driveblock system like the US version. I believe Tore has more info.
His interface is a quality piece of equipment.
