I'd like to replace my bland, black plastic door sills but don't want to spend ~$220 right now. I got some for about $65 (from memory) off Ebay. They were SS with a small Porsche Crest stuck in the middle (half way along the length). Looked better than those IMO. Look for those on Ebay, if you don't find them I could look through old invoices and such and see if I can track the seller down again?

Check out <a href="http://rennlinedesign.com" target="_blank">Rennline Design</a> for more sill choices. I have Rennline pedals and like them but can't speak for the sills, aluminum sills not being my cup of tea. They had a booth up at Hershey last year; can you wait a couple of months?

Those sills are good quality the stainless is thick and everything else is made well. I bought mine from <a href="http://www.design9.co.uk" target="_blank">www.design9.co.uk</a> also and they were very similar for a little more money. I don't think you will be dissappointed.

Factory ones are avaible from Gert and other US sources--I paid $165 for my set from a former site sponsor.

To my understanding, the $65 units on eBay are 1/2 the thickness that the others on the market are.

Plus, you can get the ImagineAuto (list sponsor) units for $65 also... And they are 16 gauge (much thicker) than the eBay units!

I bought those exact SS sills from the same seller on ebay. They are well made and look sharp.

My brother also bought these last summer (gently used) and then decided to buy a very clean used factory set. He told me that he would sell them for $50.00 + shipping.

I bought these exact sills with "Carrera S" script from this seller. He was very good to deal with.

The black part is some sort of laser or die cut vinyl applique put on with heat. It seems like it will be quite durable, and they look better than this sounds. I paid $60 plus $8 shipping and they were at my house in three days.

I'm not sure why people think thicker is better. They are plenty thick enough to prevent any scratches to your sills from your foot while getting into the car. They won't bend once installed, and they fit flush. Thicker is just heavier anyway . He should charge more for these "lightweight" sills!

Regardless, $60 is pretty low risk. If you don't like them you can always ditch them and spend 260-275 Euro (almost $300) for the heavy-duty-Hummer-grade OEM items from Gert <img border="0" alt="[icon107]" title="" src="graemlins/icon107.gif" />

If the 993 install is similar to the 964 install, thicker isn't necessarily better. The 964 has these drains on the bottom side of the door (front and back, both doors), which barely clear the sills I bought from Type-911. If the sills were any thicker, I would have to find thinner double-back tape to mount (or use glue).

All this said, I'm sure the factory sills--regardless of thickness--are designed to fit without interference.

Thanks everyone for your input, BUT, I just got this email from someone that made it look like a VERY difficult DIY due to the adhesive taking hours to remove. Here's his email to me... what do you think?

"I saw your post on the door sills and I lost my password and can't currently post on Rennlist. I replaced the black rubber sills on my '97 C4S a year and a half ago. Due to the adhesive used to secure the new and old plates, it is not a minor job. It took hours to remove the old adhesive. Installing the new plates properly (straight, etc.) requires some technique and removing the rubber weatherstripping in the door jamb provides more room.

I would not waste this much time and effort to install $60 aftermarket sills. Doing so will devalue the car and the effort involved convinced me that I will think twice before I do replace sill strips again. I am an experienced do-it-yourselfer with advice from the master tech at the local p-car dealership. I'd go with the factory sills if I did it at all. If you call Brumos and others that advertise discounts, you can do better on the price. Also, if you are a PCA member, we may get the $100 gift certicates soon. This is definitely a summer project as you will be in the garage on your knees for hours (took me at least 6 hours, mostly to get the old adhesive off without scratching the paint underneath the glue)."

PS - This was his follow up email to me...
"Oh, I forgot to comment on used sill plates. I doubt this would work. The adhesive is so strong that the sill plates will be bent and removing them so used sills would be worthless. The only used option would be plates that were on a display in a Porsche dealership parts department but locating a set for sale would take alot of telephone time. I believe I bought the last set of original 993 stainless sill plates with "Carrera 4 S" engraved on them. I called over 50 dealers and found one with a set in inventory that had been sitting there for years. Worth the effort, but I doubt I would do this upgrade again."

When I installed my sills it only took about 15-20 minutes to remove the old adhesive on each side. Used 3M adhesive remover bought from Home Depot.

Most challenging part of the install is properly positioning the new sill, so really not that difficult a DIY.
