993 Monterey Special Edition?
Hi, I'm somewhat interested in a 993 for my next Porsche (owned 356's, have an 89 Carrera) and have found an interesting one, maybe, at a Southern Cal dealership. Its billed as a 97 Monterey Edition, Carrera S. Paint is dark metallic grey with a purple/brown hue "Vesuvio" with contrasting grey mirrors, door handles and rear grills. Supposedly 200 were made to commemorate the 50th Anniversary. The original window sticker doesn't reference this, however. Not even sure it should. Do any of you know if this is legit, how many were made, etc? Thanks for any info.

There was no such Monterey special edition Carrera S. Vesuvio gray metallic was the color in which the '97 Carrera S was introduced. There was no limited production based on this color. Here's what Porsche said when they released the '97 models:
"Exclusive to the 911 Carrera S, there is also a special color "vesiviometallic" which is available at no extra charge. With this body color, the exterior mirrors, door handles, spoiler grille, wheel spokes as well as the "Carrera S" lettering on the rear lid are painted steel gray."

I have one of these cars, and it is a very rare colour. I was told that there are only 42 RHD cars in the UK in Vesuvius. Whether it is a Limited Edition or just few people ordered it in this colour - I dont know. There was an article abbout this particular car/colour combo in 911 and Porsche World in '97....(I have not read it but am desperate for a copy if anyone has it!).
Heres a pic of mine (left) and another at a Porsche meet a short while ago.
Of the few I have seen advertised for resale in the UK, they are all sold as 'Ltd Edition'.
Ltd Edition or not, it is a great colour, looks plum most of the time, metalic purple at dusk and black at night.....
Cheers,

I have one and its for sale. I really like the color, I wasnt so sure when I saw it at the dealer, but after I looked at it really is a handsome and unique color. The contrasting mirrors, door handles and rear grill set it off. I am the original owner and the window sticker said Vesuvio.
