Replace the tires, no need taking that risk. They are probably out of round as well. Keep the Targa wheels and get some nice 18" wheels with fresh rubber. Brand recommendations vary depending on intended usage but Pirelli, Bridgestone, Michelin, Yokos, etc all have strong points.
If you are slipping down the slope, first should be suspension then RSR mufflers. Your car will look, sound and feel like the brand new car it is!
Have fun!

I just paid my Rennlist 2-year membership yesterday, so soon I will become a Rennlist member *yes!*
Response to Bruce SEA 993: I bought the car from a private party (first owner) who had three cars and was also too busy working (he is the CEO of a company) to drive the Porsche. He was, however, care-minded and meticulous enough to occasionally take it out for a spin, as well as provide the time-driven car maintenance over the years (oil change, brake line flush, factory updates, etc.). Recently, he realized that he hadn't driven it over all these years, so he wanted to sell it to another Porsche lover who'd 1) make more use of the car, and 2) take good care of it like he did. That is where I got lucky and he sold it to me. When I first took it to a reputable Porsche mechanic in the SF Bay Area, the mechanic told me that it looked like the guy I bought it from purchased the car from the dealer in 1996, placed it into a time capsule, and I found it 8 years later. That's how new it is.
BTW: Per all your advice, I will get new 17" tires ASAP. Any recommendations? Pzeros? SO2s? SO3s? Others?
Also, does anyone know when is the next scheduled Bay Area Rennlisters get together event?

That's a great story. What a dream car! Congrats!
I'd recommend S03s. I've had the Michelin Pilot Sports prior to S03s, and the S03s stick a lot better.

Congratulations on a gorgeous car! I'm sure I'll see you cruising around the East Bay somewhere!
p.s...get a parachute...the slippery slope beckons and as it turns out..it's not really a slope but a drop off...hehe

Great story! I love the time capsule idea. In 10 years or so as we and our cars get older, it will be fun to see if any cars pop up after 15 to 20 years that have been kept with super low milage. I still think they are better off being driven more than sitting but it is cool to see them uncovered.

nice car and good luck!
re suspension, i put M033's and bilstein HDs. works for me, but soft for track-oriented drivers i am sure. i do believe that a little bit of a gentler setup like mine is good for these older targas as the roof could creak a bit on you. check threads for TSBs that are available on the roof..
good luck, john.

Beautiful car - congratulations! Welcome to the group!
I wouldn't worry about the oil. Mine goes through a quart about every 3k miles, and I currently have 53k miles on it.
As for tires, I had Kumho Ecsta 712s on it when I got it, and swapped them for SO3s when they wore out. I like the SO3s much better. Can't speak for other tires, though.

Nice targa, I thought about getting one since they are more rare than C4s, but I couldn't resist the widebody. Looking forward to seeing it on the next BAR drive.

You guys and your lowering............"Newbie, come over here and look over the edge of this cliff, it's really cool".
Make sure nobody is behind you, or you may get "helped" onto the slippery slope!
I don't think I'm the only one sick with jealousy at your lucky find, just the only one who'll admit it outright.
Even so I'm genuinely happy for you.
I agree with the tire advice, but a wise old upholstery guy told me all you need to clean leather is saddle soap and water, and don't bother with conditioners.
A 1996 should have about 70k miles on it, so you've got your work cut out for you. Enjoy.
