No reason to do that, in my experience.

Yeah, no need to turn new rotors and take away disc material. Besides, if you're talking about 993 stoppers, I don't think you can turn rotors that have vent holes.

So thats what the holes are for! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Jamie

BTW...Steve at Ultimate Garage has equipment for turning cross drilled rotors. I believe, however, that it is more cost effective to purchase new ones.

It seems wasteful to not be able to turn drilled rotors. Whenever I have serviced disc brakes with solid rotors, I have always had the rotors refaced.

My rotors are fine but when people replace their pads - do they also replace their rotors?

TIA,

Dave

I have not heard of anybody tuning new rotors. But I believe it is recommened to scrub them with soap and water to get any oils off of the braking surface.

I'll check with Steve about pricing for turning cross drilled rotors. I do not replace rotors every time I do pads...with the Padgid orange you only get about 6 or so track days out of the front pads (depending on the track, etc.) When I replaced my front rotors I used a cleaning agent on the surface to remove and oils on the surface.

Years ago it was recommended to turn all new rotors and drums. This was from our Raybestos rep, late 80's. These days manufacturing quality has risen to the point where one can just clean them well and install.

We would turn new rotors and drums and actually find runout on them. Never understood why exactly?

Dave,

Rotors are usually replaced when they get too thin or, depending on which criteria you ascribe to, 1) the vent hole cracks exceed 7mm in length; 2) cracks start to meet three vent holes; 3) the lip on the edge of the disc becomes too high; 4) a combination of the previous three.

I never turn Porsche rotors. For the short time they last after turning (warping is usually my issue and turning is BARELY a temporary fix for that) and the costs to do so (while minimal), I throw a fresh set of Zimmermans on ($200 a pair for the 993).

as always - YMMV

I priced a set of Zimmerman's recently, and then found a set of Porsche OEM from Sunset for as good a price...

Needless to say I went OEM.
