Default Front protection Bar

I just installed Gert's front protection bar. Since the bar has a diameter of 0.8" (roughly) how much of the scraping is due to the bar hanging down so low? This is the equivalent of lowering the car an additional 0.8" without getting any of the better looks.

Are there any LOWER PROFILE front protection bars on the market? It seems odd to make this thing so thick. What am I missing???

Warning: the following opinion contradicts general Rennlist Wisdom and may be considerered heretical...

Go without the bar! No disrespect to Gert as he has designed and put to market a very well-made piece, but I believe just as you do that lowering the threashold of scraping with another component is not a good idea. Many moons ago, I DID install the bar on my SUV-height 993. Guess what??...I scraped the car when I NEVER had before! I offered the bar here and it sold within an hour. Now, I am at just above RS height (about 24 3/4" or so at the fender lip) and have been so for over 6 months and have not scraped even once! Granted, this is due to driver awareness of dips and driveways, but that is my point. Be aware and you don't need the bar. End of heresy...

Flog the infidel!

Even though the bar takes away some clearance, I continue to use it on my ultra-low track car. Why do this, even though I almost never drive it on the street anymore? Well, I still need to get my car out of the driveway from time to time, and the transition from driveway to street is not very shallow. Without the bar, I know the lower valance is going to scrape. With the bar, I know the metal will take the brunt of the abrasions.

I have the bar. I hear that poor sob scraping as I exit some poorly designed driveways at the best angle I can get. When I bought my car 18 mos ago, the front valence was cracked (since repaired as part of the "euro-look"). I'd rather scrape the bar than risk damaging that valence again.

Agreed, but if I redesign the bar with a MUCH lower profile, wouldn't you rather have it not scrape on most things and still protect the front when needed?

You make a very good point. I believe that the Boxsters FPB is called the boomerang and is basically flat. Granted, they are two different cars but the idea of a lower profile protection device seems to have some merit.

I agree. 24 13/16" to fender, and I haven't scaped once. I do take steep driveways at a 45 degree angle, but no problems. It may be different for the guys with the turbo front ends, I think they stick down a bit lower in the front than me (standard front bumper).

Darin raises a good point that I didn't address: that the turbo/2S/4S front valance and the RS splitters all protrude forward, where the standard NB valance tucks toward the rear. Perhaps the FPB helps with the aforementioned noses but with the regular NB, I can tell you it is more of a detriment than an aid. Peace, all...except YOU Mark

With the TT bumper cover, about half the bar actually shows so it is like .04 inches. I think I can live with that for the piece of mind the FPB offers.

With a front ride height of 23 5/8", my car is at the extreme end of the scale. Hell, before my current springs, the height was even lower. If my neighbor parks too close to my driveway, he limits my approach angle, which, unfortunately, forces much of my need for the fpb. "Superslammed" or street height, I think Gert's fpb does the job but agree that a thinner profile one would be more ideal.

Everything Edward said....I did the exact same thing. Put on bar, then scraped, then sold, lowered, and no scrape. Although the largest reason I took the bar off, was due to the appearance when looking at the front of the car. I didn't like the look of the bar hanging on the bottom of the car. If you DO want a bar...Gert's is the one to get. Perfect fit/finish, and of course that superb Gert service
