Default Estimate cost?

Hello all,

I’ve fallen in love with a 993 Targa, and I’m going to see the car tomorrow. I plan to get it inspected before buying, but in reviewing the car’s documents and history, I came across the most recent invoice from the mechanic. In the advisory section, it states:

• R/H front shock absorber leaking.

• Different shock absorbers fitted on each side at the rear.

• Rear coil springs corroded.

• Exhaust corroded and starting to split on seams. Non-genuine exhaust fitted.

• New front and rear shock absorbers required.

• Ride heights require resetting once the new shock absorbers have been fitted.

• Driver’s door check strap broken.

If you check the last MOT report, available on the gov.uk website, the car passed without any advisories.

What is the estimated cost of updating the suspension and exhaust? Since the car passed its MOT with no advisories, how urgent do you think these repairs are in terms of getting them fixed?

Thanks in advance !!!!

If the exhaust is so corroded that it's splitting at the seams... I'd be wary of how bad corrosion is throughout the rest of the car. What's the mileage? And was it routinely driven during winters on salted roads?

Suspension and/or exhaust can cost anywhere from $500-$5,000 based on what you'd like... Bilstein HD shocks with H&R springs all the way to Ohlin 3-way adjustable coilovers... and used OEM exhaust all the way to Cargraphic full exhaust.
Again with the level of corrosion on the exhaust I'd look at suspension bushings (if original) which would already be considered old without environmental factors.

Here's a comprehensive video on door check strap repair:
The cost really depends on the specialty shop you find to do it... ~$800 per side should be expected

Suspension and exhaust are easy (used stock exhaust is inexpensive). Check strap is going to be the expensive one on the list. To fix it right the door and fender have to come off.

To the best of my knowledge the car has been very little driven in the last 12 years and maybe not superbly protected from rain. The car has not seen snow or salty roads, but I could be wrong.

Regarding suspension I’d look for something OEM or something for country roads (I guess that moves closer to the cheap side)

Thanks for the video … I’ll check it out

If the exhaust is rusted, there is rust elsewhere. Look at this car very closely and get it up on a hoist. I would never buy a rusty 993.

Hi J,
Yes, if I saw this I would walk away from the car as 993 are very corrosion resistant. The example must have spent a good part of its life along the coast exposed to salt air.
Also the mismatched struts suggest to me the previous owner was not exactly festidious in maintaining the car.
In any event here is a page on evaluating a 993 for Purchase:

Happy hunting,
Andy

I would suggest to NOT buy this car, there are others in much better condition.

Are you getting a deal on this car, compared to the pricing on others you have seen?

For a stock like suspension, you can do the Koni Special active shocks for 925 Euros ( and if springs needed, combo for 1400 Euros), from www.carnewal.com Installation extra of course.

It stated non factory exhaust fitted. It might have rusted because it's poor quality. I wouldn't pass on the car only for this reason but would inspect the rest carefully.

Hello Andy,
I’ve just come back from seeing the car and it’ll get it inspected by a professional mid next week but sharing my take !!! The car was not in a garage just by the street and I couldn’t lift it and remove the covers to see better.

There is no sign of rust in the body at all. I tried to look underneath and there was nothing obvious. I asked about the exhaust and reckons given the car is fully loaded with options (included 159), he thinks those exhaust were a special made/ordered for the car (No idea if true or not and what should be the right answer either).

I could spot other small defects that brought my attention:
1) front bumper was slightly tilting down (compared to my 994 C2S at least) like 2-3mm gap between the front wings and the bumper.

2) the targa roof had broken the upholstery on the right side / passenger seat only. Misaligned?? (attached)

Targa roof /upholstery broken

3) one targa wheel had rust and also another part I don’t know the name (sorry)

back left wheel and tyre

4) right back wing had a bubble of paint exploded (got repainted recently) and he told me to just fix quickly that as it is an easy inexpensive job. (attached)

5) I could drive it for 10 mins and I felt the second gear was different from my 993 C2S. I come from a 1973 2.4 and it felt a bit like that gearbox: rough and having to make an effort to get it from 1-2 and less from 2-3 (not sure if clutch/flywheel or the gearbox or just it is what it is !!!)

I’ll keep you posted

Paint doesn’t just ‘explode”. There is moisture under there and I’ll bet a paycheck it was painted due to rust.

I recently spent $3,400 parts and labor for Koni active, OEM springs and full alignment.
