Steering rack failure - rebuilt replacement?
Morning. I had my car in for service and it was brought to my attention I have a serious steering rack leak which needs replacement. The new OEM part is $11,000 CAD but have found a couple rebuilt OEM racks for significantly less ($2K).
Are there any negatives with replacing with a rebuilt rack VS a new one? The price is significantly less and would obviously rather not spend what isn’t necessary.
thanks in advance.
Matt

These are getting VERY hard to find. As long as the rebuilt carrys a warranty, I see no issues. I replaced mine many years ago now with an OEM rack- i think it was around $ 2,800 US installed. $ 11K seems CRAZY high. There are seal kits out there that many use and do it themselves, but that's way beyond my level. good luck!

Hi Matt,
The best and most durable finished rack is to take your rack directly out of service and have it rebuilt. It is in better condition as a core for a rebuilt rack. It does not having weld rust repairs or gnarled splines as seen on the racks made from the rebuiders core stock, if they have any.
