HELP!!! 993 vs. 996
I apologize if this topic has been discussed to death, but...I need some advice. I have previously owned a 964 and 996. I currently drive an Audi TT quattro coupe and am getting ready to buy another Porsche. I miss driving one badly. Nothing compares. I am trying to decide between a 993 coupe or targa and a 996 coupe. The car would be my daily driver, although I would have alternate transportation in snow or really bad weather (Volvo XC90). I love the looks and lines of the 993, but also like the modern improvements of the 996. I hear the 993's are more reliable. I think this would be a car I would drive for 4 to 5 years. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Scott

Drive a 993. It is much different than a 964 and 996.
A lot will have to do with personal preference. Also search the forum for Targa issues-you might decide a coupe is the way to go. As far as reliability is concerned with low/mid mileag, reg. maint specimens, 996 and 993 are a wash (MOP)- although folks who do tracktime will have different opinions.
If you were to ask me-993 all the way for it's timeless looks and "old school" sports car feel.

Drive both and see which one you like. If you look into depreciation, the 993 will fair much better in my mind. You might want to post this question on the 996 board. You'll probably get different answers. I recently drove a 996 and here were my impressions:

I'm new to this forum, but I'll add my two cents. This comes down to the cush factor, in my opinion. You've driven the 996, with its more refined interior and demeanor. And you've driven the 964, with its more visceral sports car driving experience. If you want to go for the cush, the 996 is there for you. But I think you'll miss the true sports car driving experience if you go that way. Remember the 993 is an evolution of the car you once owned. It's smoother, faster, and less expensive to operate. The people in this forum who have owned both (I'm not one of them) say the operating costs between the 996 and the 993 are very similar. Finally, the 993 is a lot better looking than the 996. I suggest you go to the Post entitled "Me and some of my friends at the office" here in the 993 forum. It has pictures of the 993 and 996 parked next to each other. You be the judge.
I'd say you should follow ksjcorpus' advice. Get the 993 now, and wait to buy a 997 later (the cush will come with the 997). Stick to the classic look. That's what Porsche figured out when it remodeled the 996 to become the more classic looking 997.
