Default Another Front Protection Bar question

hi guys,
firstly, thank you all for fielding my many questions that have arisen from the new TT - seems i didnt realize how mint my c2 is, but im sure ill be delighted once everything is workedout.
i share Oldguys sentiments on how helpful everyone has been.
3 FPB questions:
1- i just ordered the FVD protection bar. Is this the same thing as the one that Gert sells - it is much cheaper ($75), any reason not to use it versus the Gert one?
2- my mechanic thought it was a bad idea as you have to drill 3 holes into the trunk floor. He thought as it does not attach in the same way as the little rubber spoiler, any more firm impact would rip open the trunk floor and then it would have to be rewelded. Is he missing something? Can it attach just to the bumpercover rather than the floor?
3- any reason to attach the little rubber spoiler as well under the nose?
thanks,
=rob

Rob,

The FVD bar is not the same as Gert's. IMHO, Gert's bar is the only way to go, for the very reason your mechanic mentioned. Why drill three holes in your car if, for a measly $75, you can bolt it right on?

Gert's bar fits into pre-existing holes in the front pan. Very easy to install-great product and the car does not get any extra holes drilled into it.

Rob,

You get what you pay for. Not sure why you're asking which one is better, as you say the FVD FPB is enroute. Gert's FPB requires no holes to be drilled and fits like it was designed by Porsche.

The FPB is round and meant to ride up and over a curb or obstruction. A direct impact will cause other damage, of course. The FPB is there to "lift" up the nose and protect the bumper cover.

I would not attach a FPB to the plastic bumper cover, it defeats the purpose of the device entirely. It needs to attach to the steel floor pan so it can ride up and over a curb.

I don't know about the FVD FPB, but Gert's FPB fits better if that plastic chin spoiler is removed and discarded completely. The FPB then tucks into the "slot" left by the chin spoiler. When I bought mine, I spoke to Gert on the phone and he recommended I do this.

Rob, along the same line as "you get what you pay for", after 252 posts and a lot of help from the guys and gals here at Rennlist, don't you think it's time to pony up a membership fee?

I have Gert's bar on one car and another one that requires drilling of three holes on the other car. I would recommend you go with Gert's bar.

Rob,

I have a front protection bar that was installed by the dealer according to the prior owner. He said it was a Porsche part but I don't really know. The front protection bar has three bolts that go thru the pan, I'm sure they drilled holes to mount the part. The bar has no rust on it and it fits perfectly into that little recessed space.

I'd be interested to see what your bar looks like. Maybe you could post a picture when you get it.

SH*T!!
i ordered the FVD thinking they were all the same thing (FVD generally sells oem/identical parts)
I wasnt being cheap and had no idea of the difference until my mechanic called me a joker for wanting to drill holes in my car.
I guess i should return it. How long will it take Gert to ship?
Did viperbob say he was selling some?

Viperbob does sell them. You can also purchase directly from Gert. You will get it plenty quick. As others have said, it is the bar to go with. Have fun with your new TT!

VB does indeed. He sold me mine (Gerts), for $175.00 which included shipping. He usually has a few in stock. Takes anywhere from 1-6 days depending on West or East Coast.

You would think that it would take weeks coming from Europe. But I got mine in 3 days.

Yes, Gert is extremely fast. I don't understand how he can get stuff to us in 2-4 days when domestic shipment by UPS is typically 5 days or more. Gert is very dependable.
