It isn't impossible, but there are some things that you can screw up (like I did) with bad results - I swapped a stock 993 shifter for a 993 RS shifter - that has the 2 toned aluminum ball end. The mistake I made was in trying to be to rough with the metal clamps that actually hold the edge of the boot to the openings - I broke off oneof the locating tabs and it doesn't fit as tighly as it should. I thik EJ has something on it on his DIY pages.

Rolo,
I swapped my stock shifter for the RS, it was pretty simple, even without instructions and didn't take very long either. As J Stewart mentions, be gentle, treat her like a woman and you should be fine if you can work your way around a screw driver? Just do it one step at a time, look at where your console is connected and remove the screws, lift each section gently to see where the next mounting is then remove that etc. etc. You will have to pop out the little panels with the switches (roof, hazards etc.), lift them out of their holes, then swivel them back through the hole so you can lift the center console. Remember, the existing shift **** has a screw that holds it to the shaft so remember to roll the boot up like removing a .... well, you'll figure that out. Undo the screw and remove. The RS shifter for example didn't seem to have this screw to hold it down, but didn't seem to need it either.

Good Luck.

Dylan.

Rolo, I found it to be quite simple. I took a flat screwdriver protected with some tape and used it to gently pry the boot away from the clips that hold it in. I think there were 4. Next I rolled up the boot as Dylan describes and just pulled it directly off the shifter. It was tight but came right off. I didnt have any screws or anything else to remove. I put the new one (also the RS shifter) back on the same way and used a pair of pliers protected with a soft cloth on the leather boot to pull the boot back into the 4 clips. Took about 10 minutes. Has been on for over a year and has not given me one problem. Mick

FWIW

Apply some Lexol leather conditoner to the LH edge of the boot. It acts as a lubricant and makes pulling the boot into the locked position much easier.
