964 vs. 993
I had a E36 M3 and I agree that it was a very good handling car and much easier to drive up to the limit than a 911.
993 has a more sophisticated rear end. makes it a lot less hairy at the limit.
a rear engines car enables you to get on the car earlier, which is key, but the tradeoff is weight distribution as well as how that affects your line. a car with the same power but better balance is going to, lap after lap, out track and out class you given equal drivers. the other driver is working less.
the m3 is lot closer to neutral all the way to the limit than a 993 and even more forgiving. i.e. more than likely why most people would say it is a better handling car.
does it have a race proven engine? nope. race ready brakes? nope.

However, since everyone is arguing the merits of the BMW's handling, who cares?!?!?! Given the choice, what percentage of people would rather OWN and BE SEEN in a Porsche, any Porsche, than a BMW, any BMW?
It's funny, in a way, that part of what makes some cars fun to drive is the "noise, vibration, and harshness", that together lend a raw, nimble appeal to a sportscar almost regardless of the actual performance. That's one of the primary reasons I didn't buy a 996 C4S- to me, it felt kinda numb, even though it technically has higher performance than the 993 Carrera S that I happily ended up with. My brother, who has a 964, is very happy with his compared to my 993 for some of the same reasons- to him, it feels a little more raw, which contributes to the fun factor.
And ultimately, that's what it boils down to- which car puts the biggest grin on your face? I'd hate to think the grin comes from being SEEN in what you drive, as opposed to the simple joy of driving it!
But that's just my opinion...
