Question Optima Battery

I need to replace my battery and I seem to recall an orange top Optima being highly recommended. When I went to the optima web site, it appears they no longer make the orange top and when you look up Porsche Carrera under their application search, no matching applications are found. Does anyone know if the current Optima yellow or red top will work on a 993?

TIA,

Doug

Doug,

You may want to check the Rennlist e-mail list section, because there was a very thorough discussion of the of the Optima batteries in 911's a couple of weeks ago that included model numbers. Beware that may listers reported problems with Optimas that they recently purchased. Many people loved the batteries, but it seemed there may be some quality control problems with the current offerings from Optima. It was very interesting reading and offered some less expensive alternatives, check it out before you decide to fork out premium $$$ for a battery.

I have used Optima batteries in 3 different 911s with no problems. A 993 is the latest one. You can make your own adapter plate or purchase one. The biggest headache (IMHO) was the positive terminal with its unusually shaped connector which does not fit well on the Optimas. There are various ways to make this work... I can share what I tried/did if interested.

Many here have put Interstate batteries in their 993, me included. I don't remember model number or anything, but the battery fit easily with no fuss as I recall.
I don't have the car anymore so I can't check on it for you.

I recently put a red-top Optima in my car. It fit perfectly, with no adapters needed. A complete bolt-in. I still have my battery tender hocked up to it.

I had originally bought the Optima battery for my BMW 525i, but the terminals were on the wrong side and would have shorted out.. I put the 993 battery in there, turned around, and using the vent tube, and wound up with the Optima in the P-car.

Pep Boys has then for $109.

Thanks everyone. I am going to look for an orange top Optima as a replacement for my existing Interstate. I may also need to add a trickle charger, as I only use the car on weekends and sometimes it can sit for a couple of weeks at a time. The other factor is Texas' summertime heat is very hard on batteries.
