993 Prices....Wow ! Looking For a Porsche
Once a week I check a membership site where I found my '98 S....I thought I had gotten a great Porsche deal, but a few new listings caught my eye. In the interest of friendship and helping others, I will list a few of the private, one owner offerings:
'97 S, 8,300 miles, blk/blk, 18"techs, LSD, $57,000 OBO, NE
'98 S, 10,150 miles, blk/blk, Tip., Aero Kit, $65,000, NE
'96 Coupe, 10,350 miles, blk/cash., LSD, 17", $53,500, MW
'98 Cab. 6,100 miles, silver/blk, $60,000 OBO, NE
'97 S, 2,000 miles, GR/BLK, loaded, $65,000, WC
There were a ton of new offerings in the 993 line, all years, types, miles and prices...I am really tempted to buy the first listing subject to a PPI, but maybe I'll come to my senses tomorrow. Some way I keep finding myself in the position of owning two Porsches at the same time.
I am happy to email contact info etc., but I can't post it in a public forum....I have no interest in this but hopefully helping someone enjoy a Porsche!

I don't think I completely disagree with you and maybe these examples are going for a bit less than before...but these prices are not too much to get exited about
Most of the examples are approx. 5 yrs old out of warranty, still expensive and lost only 30% of their value from new. Most 5yr old cars have lost more than 50% of their value.
Don't get me wrong, If I was in need of a p-car and was going to spend 50-60K, one of these would make me very happy, but in most circles (not porsche) these prices would be difficult to justify

I think you are right....of the five examples only two or three would make sense to spend some time on. My experience was to discount the asking price by 7 to 10 % or more. On the car I purchased, the seller accepted my offer which was 8% lower than his asking price. When you start subtracting $4,000 to $7,000 or more the attraction level starts to rise....the wholesale or trade in pricing is just flat ugly. If these type Porsches are being replaced by new toys, there has to be plenty of margin to play with as a seller. Of course, the depressed 996 used pricing also takes some of the starch out of such asking prices.
I went back for 45 days and I pulled up 13 offerings in the reasonable range...there were a fair number of absurd pricings in the high $60,000 to low $70,000.

I was not trying to make this a mystery.....It is the Porsche Club of America site. You have to be a member, which requires that you own a Porsche. I think there is a six month program for future owners...it may be called "Quest".
I posted examples that were listed on the Mart yesterday....it requires a password to enter....sign on or call them..

What does depreciation on other marques have to do at all with good buys on Porsches?
The 993 has always held it's value better than all but 1 car (Mercedes SL), and there is good reason for it--limited production, amazing performance, classic style, etc.

I was trying to add some perspective. As Porsche owners and buyers, we're all used to seeing these prices -- we know they're justified for the reasons you mention. What we see as great values are often difficult for NEW potential Porsche consumers to understand. I would estimate that a very large % of P-car sales are to 1st time buyers....is there anyway to get stats on this?
Anyhow, my point is that P-car's high sustaining values are an anomoly in the used car market. Justified, just not what most people expect in high-end lux, production cars.

I was trying to point out some current opportunities....as I pointed out in a subsequent quote I was not suggesting a blanket validation of the asking prices.....to the contrary.
The PCA Mart is more current than Panorama....there are something like 340 Porsches listed by PCA members of which probably 15 % or more are from the 993 series.
I feel it is an attractive alternative to Ebay or auction cars at a dealer....I had a very postive experience buying "sight unseen".
My only problem has been finding the best tire pressure for my new SO2s

is it just me, or are you thinking too, "WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE!" <img src="graemlins/offtopic.gif" border="0" alt="[offtopic]" /> My gawd, they buy these fantastic cars, and apparently all they do with them is wash them and drive them to a concours once a year. 5 year old cars with 10K miles? Give me a break!
Cars are meant to be driven. They are not designed to sit in a garage all day. These people should be taken out and forced to trade in their Porsches for a Corvette or something.

The 1998 C2S I bought had almost 28,000 miles since its delivery on Nov. 10th 1997....or roughly 5,800 miles per year....the seller did the 30,000 mile service, mounted new SO2s and a $1,000 plus worth of stuff to meet Porsche Certification and Warranty standards, which I got via a great dealer.
It is not mint, but it was taken care of and I have the service records etc....It has a few rock chips, but it runs great! And it also cost a bit under $50,000 which was great!
All the above not withstanding, the "garage queens" represent an a great opportuntity to get one of the last air cooled Porsches....The cost of entry will be higher as will the " lack of use " dollars....I guess you have to pick your poison.
Now if I could just find the right WHEEL LOCK KEY I would be estatic with my '98 S!!!!!!

MJBird993.....I understand what you say, but for people like me, a 2 seat p-car is not practicle for everyday driving. I put over 25k a year on my 528i because it has 4 doors and a liveable back seat. In my line of business, a P-car has to sit most of the time. Does that mean that we don't deserve to own and enjoy one when we can?
I had an '86 911 that I only put 4,000 miles on it in the 4 years that I owned it. But I remember almost every one of them! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Like me, no matter how much you insist, I ain't selling my 911 which sits most of it's time in Finland in my garage and get's driven only about 300 miles per year (I do most of my driving here with my 993) because those two weeks in summer when I'm there, it's worth of all that trouble & money!

Like me, no matter how much you insist, I ain't selling my 911 which sits most of it's time in Finland in my garage and get's driven only about 300 miles per year (I do most of my driving here with my 993) because those two weeks in summer when I'm there, it's worth of all that trouble & money!

My first post on the 993 board. I just bought my 1st 993. it is a 1995 cab with 51k miles polar silver over black. Hi-Fi, windscreen, 8-ways, etc.. but all completely stock incl. wheels. Never been painted or anything. I traded my '84 targa and my '89 951 but all in I have $43k in mine. I felt ok with that. I'd rather it be a '96 but this one was right here and passed the pre-buy with flying colors. Do you think they broke it off in be or did I do all right? <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />
By the way, I LOVE THIS CAR!!!! so if I am upside-down, that's ok by me!

I am about sick of hearing this kind of statement I paid my money for my car and I will decide how often I drive...and I'm not gonna feel any guilt or remorse for it. I too have a 5-series daily driver that gets about 25K miles a year, and it handles that task much better than my 993 ever could...for what should be obvious reasons. I bought my 993 for a pleasure car, for sunny days, to wash, look at, and drive when I feel like it. If you want to drive the wheels off yours, go for it, if I had a job that allowed me to daily drive mine, I might do the same. I agree that the cars are designed to be driven, but when you step back and take a look it sitting still...it's obviously meant to be washed, looked at, driven to concours, fondled (oops...I won't go there ) and the like. So how about letting everybody enjoy their own car as they like... <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />
