Question 18 inch wheels on MY94 993

Hello,

I have just fitted 18 inch Turbo Technology wheels and Tyres from a 996 car on my 1994 993.
All is well except the car "Tram Lines" on uneven road surfaces, it did do this a little on my 17 inch wheels but not as often.
I have herd about fitting a "steering support bracket" and wish to know what this does and will it solve my problem.
The Tyres are Conti 225/40/18 in very good condition and I have put in 36psi all round.
Can anyone help or is this something I will have to live with

John,
I have a extra steering support bracket with the 20mm bolts. I bought it by mistake and found out my car already had one. It is a very simple installation. The brace fits between the 2 brackets that hold your rack and pinion to the sub frame. I don't think it will solve the problem your having but it is a must for running 18 inch wheels. There is a upgrade bulletin from Porsche for this part. contact me off line if your interested

Eric,

I just sent you an PM if John isn't interested.

John, I think it's 'normal' that your car behaves differently, especially if the tyre widths have been changes.
Your tyre's aren't all 225/40, or are they? If yes, well, that's propably the problem. rear tyres should be 255 or 265, not 225.

John,

Early last year I put the 996 18's with the Conti Sports on my 4/94 build '95 993 with great results. Couldn't believe how much they transformed the handling of the car, without loosing any highway comfort...and so much easier to clean inside

However, like Finn said, your rear widths seems undersized.

Thanks to those who replied and don't worry I do have 265's on the back.
I still dont know what the bracket does but I have a service in 2K so will get one fitted anyway (must be a good reason)and checked out for any other problems that may cause "Tramlining".

regards

If I remember , its to reinforce the strength of the steering parts to accommodate the larger cornering loads of the 18" wheels.

I'm fitting the same on my cars. John make sure you call your mechanic in advance and tell them you need this bracket. I searched a lot of dealers and none had the part in stock. That means around a 10 business day wait to order it...

Have you checked your alignment? The bigger wheels might be emphasizing even a minor alignment issue? I know with my last car, about every 12 months I would have to get an alignment done because it would start to tramline BADLY on 17" wheels. And it would almost start to happen immediately like something happened rather than slowly appearing as an issue. Worth the few bucks for handling and tire wear anyway.

Ok, thanks to everyone, this web site never lets you down.

Update.
I have ordered the bracket (993 34713102) coming from Germany in 4 days price £28.73 and bolts.
Found a great web site
www.p-car.com/technical/wheel that shows the TSB and how to fit (30 mins) so I will have a go next week and give a update.

Regarding the Tramlining, one suggestion was to up the PSI so I am running on 38 all round which has helped a bit.
The alignment was done about 4 months ago when I had the 17's on but I will get this checked on the next service.

thanks again

Thats very cheap John.
Where are you getting it from.
Does it include delivery.

In UK the part would be £40 + VAT + delivery.

ps , make sure that its for appropriate left/right hand drive.

Bins

I ordered from AFN in Guildford, if you add the bolts at £1.68 and the VAT it will be about £40.

You got me worried now re RH or LH, this is only a bracket that goes between two bolts so why would they be different, log on to P-Car web site for a nice picture.

regards

Thanks,

If its through AFN then you wont have to worry about right/left anyway.

There is no difference between lhd & rhd for these brackets.

BTW The website you mention (p-car.com) is run by Robin, who is normally on this site

John, are you local to AFN Guildford ??
As my profile says, I'm in Cranleigh (6 miles south from AFN) and regularly see other 993s (There is one only half a mile up the road !) but they rarely wave if I put my hand up.

Maybe see you at the next beer meet.

Cheers,
John.

Hi all,

Did the job this afternoon and the bracket or Crossstrut as the Germans call it fitted fine, I would suggest purchasing a good 6mm hex to fit your socket set as the bolts were tight to undo.

Once the car is off the ground it took about 30 mins, I did have to carefully bend one of the fluid pipes to allow the bracket to fit better.
I did make one mistake and ordered the wrong bolts as the bracket needs longer one's, I will list the p/n below.
993 347 131 02 Crossstrut
999 218 102 09 Screw (standard bolt)
999 218 103 09 Screw (longer bolt)
Well has it made a diference I hear you ask, funny but it may have or is it just me, anyway it's peace of mind and will stop other parts wearing out in the future.

Note to the other John,
Yes I live near you in Horsham, have a silver 993 with body kit and I normaly wave, when and where is the next beer meet.
I went to the Porche 911 world magazine meet last year at Walton on the Hill but that about it.

best regards
and thanks again to everyone, I love this site.

John B
