Post Great day-Got my PCA license plates+ MVA story & (4) 911 posters came in mail

Finally got my long awaited (1 month wait for the title to come in the mail) PCA license plate today (Pics at http://gallery.rennlist.com/gallery/96C4S from my friendly Maryland MVA. Apparantly, Valentines day & the day before a large snowfall is the best day of the year to hit the MVA - it was empty! I ended up getting this happy, talkative lady and she was so excited that I got a Porsche 911 as someone put a screensaver on her computer just that morning which continuously showed 12 Porsches including the "Kills Bugs Fast" pic (which ironically came in the mail today with the other 3 posters I ordered from the ebay gent), and a 993 pic that looked very similiar to mine.

She also pulled out a NADA book and told me my car should have sold for $48k as it had low miles (it's got 59k mi!). I asked her why she added money to the value for low miles when it had 59K? She said that they figure cars average about 12k mi per year, and anything below that is a low mileage add in value. I told her that actually my car has high miles for a 96 Porsche, as most people keep them as 2nd or 3rd cars and don't drive them as much... She told me she hoped I'd drive it alot, as it needed to be driven. Not sure how she knew this, but I promised to do just as she said .

I love the look of the Porsche Club of America plates, and was surprised to find out that only 2 states have approved them.

I also came home to a large UPS box and realized they were the 4 posters I ordered from the gent on Ebay. They were in perfect condition, and just as advertised. I can't wait to frame them, but they're so nice, I'm not sure I want to leave them in the cold, humid garage now! I guess they'll be OK out there... Hmmmm - maybe they'll end up in the office.

They're expecting as much as 18 inches of snow in the next 48 hours so I'll have to wait a while to drive the 993.

Question - I put the front license plate on and the K40 license plate holder over it (last pic on page 3). I pushed the K40 lic plate holder onto the front bumper with very little force. It doesn't seem to fit real tight on there - should I just stick some electrical tape or something on the plug piece from the license plate holder to make it fit tighter? I don't want it to fall off!

Steve, which 4 posters did you get?

I got the "kills bugs fast" and it looks great.

Hey Pete,

Ok, so in addition to "Kills Bugs Fast", I also got the one w/ the red 993 and it reads "It usually happens about the 3rd or 4th day when you're just cruising along and suddenly you realize your car was almost entirely built by hand and not just the engine and the body but everything all the way down to the stitching in the seats and you start to get this soft warm feeling in your midsection that if people can do something this amazing with their bare hands then maybe there's hope for mankind after all" I just love that ad copy - it's so weird!!!
My wife doesn't get this one ...

The next one shows a silver 993 like mine from a birds eye view and reads: "The New 911 Carrera 4 - Maximum traction on wet surfaces, Greater control when cornering, Added security in all conditions, Improved driver comfort. The choice is yours"

The last one shows yet another silver 993 and simply says "The New Carrera: 911% driving pleasure"

Life is good.

The only one I know of is Maryland and 1 other. I don't remember what the other state is, that has them available. The guy from the Chesapeake Region hooked me up with the plates via a letter to the MVA. It was a $10 fee to join the Chesapeake region PCA and then the $25 fee to the MVA. The good thing about them is that you don't have to renew them ($$$) every 2 years like vanity plates, as the PCA plates are Organization Plates . I'm pretty sure that's what Bruce from the Chesapeake region told me.

Peace,
Steve

Hi Steve. I just purchased a Guards Red 993tt and would love to have the red car poster. Any ideas? What about Big Daddy's? As a surgeon I particularly like the part about 'bare hands'.

P.S. I've had a GD sticker on my 84 911 since buying it in 93. Very good luck.

And, of course, any Deadhead can tell you the significance of that 4:20 license plate number you got, too ...

Hi Thomas: I got them on Ebay from a nice gent... do a search for 911 posters and you'll pull up his vast array of stuff. He's got tons of them, pages and pages of listings! Glad to hear your Grateful Dead sticker was good luck for you too on your 911. Since I've had mine on my car, "life looks like easy street" with no danger at my door.

And to Vic: I'm afraid I don't know the significance of 4:20 in Grateful Dead history... can you enlighten me?

Man is it white out there. Glad I have a garage for my car!

Type "meaning of 420" into google. Basically refers to one of the main substances used by those types that frequent dead and phish shows.

Jeez, you know you're getting old (42) when you don't even understand drug references anymore and you used to be a druggie (up till the age of ... 30!)

Oh well - I guess that's a good thing.

Obligatory Porsche content : I wanted to take some pics of the car in the snow today, so I got into it and it just reeked of intense leather smell. What a glorious olfactory experience. I could just hang in there today, reading the Washington Post. I leatheriqued it in the garage for the first time 2 weeks ago, using a hair dryer as described in the leatherique literature to work in the conditioner with a plastic bag over the seat (to trap the heat better, I guess).

It's 2 weeks later and the car smells like new, or better than new! I can't wait for spring so I can drive this thing! This is the only time of year, during a snowstorm, that I wish I could trade places with you California and Florida drivers. I know, "why did I buy a C4S if I'm not going to drive it year round?" I thought that too, before I bought it - "I'm going to drive it every day, good weather and bad". Now that I have it, I really don't want to subject that gorgeous skin of hers to the ravages of salt and cold weather road crap. She deserves better and I intend on keeping her inside during the dreary, salty days of winter. Once it melts though... yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaw!

I believe 4:20 is the LAPD's code for someone under the influence of, um, herb. Various t-shirts and bumper stickers have variations on the "what time is it" and " is it 4:20 yet?" theme.

So, your license plate certainly compliments your Grateful Dead sticker. I never drove a Porsche to a Dead show, but what the hey ...

It was early summer in 93 when my then 13 Y/O son and I drove my just-purchased 84 911 slate blue Targa from WA down to Eugene, OR for a wonderful GD show at Autzen Stadium. The Targa top was stowed the sun shown and all along I-5 multitudes of 'Heads' were traveling together. Got several thumbs up for my license THE 11. We had no tickets but went anyway hoping for a 'miricle'. No sooner had we parked and put on the car cover when we scored ticket #1 and a scalper provided us with #2 and we were in! To this day it is one of my fondest memories of my son, my car and The Dead.

Great story. I used to have DARKSTR (Dark Star), 1KO 1K0 and IKO 001 as previous license plates, with STLABLU (Stella Blue) on my 88 911 Coupe in ... slate blue!

Guess we have alot in common.

Liked your story about the trip to Oregon in your 84 911. I of couse have a tape of that Autzen Stadium show (and about 1200 other tapes). I find Porsche ownership and being a Dead fan really go together quite well. Dead stickers look their best when on the curvacious lines of a 911. They don't look half bad on my 740i either! They really tone down the badas* personality and perceived expensiveness of the 911 and the BMW .

Pennsylvania also issues PCA plates thanks to the efforts of Tom Zaffarano of Reisentoter Region (Philadelphia area). It takes 300 firm orders to get the state to okay a special plate.
