O.k., I've arranged to go to a body shop I trust this weekend. They have two options: first, they have some spare 993 headlights that I might swap for if the HID bulb fits their housings better; second, they have a dremel, files, etc. to enlarge the housing if the first option fails.

I still have hope that by Sunday my night vision will be substantially improved

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has ever encountered this type of problem . . . . 'misery loves company.'

Just to close out this thread -- turns out the problem was on the Porsche end. I swapped headlights with a 993 destined for the salvage yard and the HID bulbs slid right in without a problem.
