Default 993 Carrera - issues issues issues, help me please!

Hi guys,

I need your help, since my 993 is driving me nuts.

It’s a 1994 Carrera 2 6 speed. Bought it last year, after it had been standing for around 5 years. Did all the technical work and got it up and running again, but still, issues are popping up. I'm a home mechanic and like to do things myself. Very proud of what i have achieved so far, but now i'm a bit stuck with this car. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

Now, I have some troubles from the beginning on with the following things:

ABS/ ABD – The lights are showing and it is definitely not working. Checked all connections, everything seems right. Replaced the rear sensors, which didn’t help. We thought it was the rear sensors due to lifting it and the letting the engine run with the car in gear, the lights went off. Now they are off, but ABS is still not working..

Alarm – So this car has an alarm system. When I lock the drivers door and then unlock it, the alarm goes off. As in, I have to open it via the passenger side. Not ideal.

Passenger window – Also very strange, the passenger window doesn’t go up. Replaced the button, checked the motor (which makes sound as I push the button), but it still doesn’t go up. There’s only one relay, and the driver’s window is working fine.

Front suspension – When braking hard the car initially nods to the left before going in a straight line, just like it has to settle itself. Also what I hear when going over speedsbumps and uneven roads at low speed is a “clunck” kind of sound from the left front. Are there typical rubbers that wear out and make this thing come up?

Power steering – The power steering seems a bit uneven, especially at low speeds. Tips?

Your expertise is greatly appreciated!

Marc

On the passenger window since you say the motor is definitely running, then that eliminated any switch/electrical fault. You are going to have to disassemble the door card and take a look. First time around it will probably be an hour's job, second time 10 minutes max.

Once disassembled try too see if the motor is attached properly and the teeth are engaging with the regulator.. Unfortunately it is probably likely the teeth on the regulator have broken off. You can find used ones on ebay, but personally speaking from experience I wish I had bought a new one first time around.

ABS is not a DIY. You should take it somewhere.

Power steering, fix suspension first and see if issue persists. Then probably get the rack rebuilt, there are threads here how to do it yourself.. (I am assuming youve checked the fluid level and its fine).

In regards to front suspension, it's typical to need to replace the front lower control arm bushings. A few good sources like Elephant Racing and FDMotorsports for the bushings. Do a search and you will find lots of discussion on this topic. Others may chime into those that provide the service of installing the bushings for you. Makes it really easy. Bushings make a huge difference over the 25yo rubber bushings.

Front suspension clunking - especially if on turns at low speed, can suggest worn top hats on the struts.

That's a good call. Another thing to check if you get a clunk while cycling the suspension is the health of the droplinks. Probably shot on most of these cars by now.

Front end clunking / shifting - check top hats, check front control arm bushings, check sway drop links, check front control arm ball joints, check outer tie rod.

Power steering - change steering rack bushings, check for oil leaks or weeping from the rack. If weeping, get it rebuilt

You're probably running original rubber, which is 29 years old by now.

Check/clean ground strap to battery and the local grounding points in the car.

993s don’t really have electrical issues and when they do it’s typically a grounding issue.

Steering rack and worn suspension are typical.
