G50/ 20 or 21 gearbox?
I'm reading Paul Frere Porsche 911 Story 6th edition and in chapter 4, Evolution of the Transmission, it says that
"In view of the noise regulations in the USA, Canada and Switzerland, the cars exported to those countries were fitted with the G50/20 gearbox which has a taller ratios than regular G50/21 box, except for the 1st gear.
Because of the stricter regulations implemented from 1997 in the other countries, the G50/20 box was fitted to all 911 atmopheric models from the model year 1997 on.
As expected, the elastcity suffers from the taller ratios. For example, in 5th gear, a 1996 Carrera accelerates from 80 to 120kph in 7.0 seconds, while 1997 model requires 8.6 seconds for the same exercise. "
I'm wondering what exact date did they start using the slower accelerating gearbox for U.S. market? Looking at my certificate of authenticity, the car's model year is 1997, but Production Completion Date is July 12, 1996. Does my car has the G50/21 or the G50/20?????

I was under the impression that all US 993 had the longer ratio gear box. Hence why everybody raves about going to the shorter ratios. I did not think it was limited to 97 on.

Trackjunkie, Maybe you're right. I probably misunderstood the write up. It did say that "In view of the noise regulations in the USA, Canada and Switzerland, the cars exported to those countries were fitted with the G50/20 gearbox which has a taller ratios than regular G50/21 box, except for the 1st gear."
So I guess it doesn't matter what year/model our cars are

Mike,
Get under your car and remove the gearbox plastic cover and have a look at the type stamping, near the drain plug. You'll see what you have.
G50-20-01 is US ratio with open diff
G50-20-02 is US ratio with LSD and so on..
Hope this helps

No US bound car received a G50/21 box. All including the 95's ( like my March 94 built cabrio) received the G50/20.
You can also check the code which is stamped on the bottom of your gearbox when you lift the car up
