Default Speedo sticks

I was out driving today, as I am anytime I can think of a reason to, and noticed it for the first time. My speedo needle will stick after coming to a stop. It will free up when I hit about 40 mph. It works fine, up and down, until I stop again. Is there some place I can or should grease or oil it?

It's a '95 Cab that I bought last August with 52K.

Thanks,
Jim

I have a gauge that sticks, namely the oil pressure gauge. When yours gets stuck does it go down if you tap the glass? If so, I am told, it is likely that it is the gauge thats at fault. My mechanic told me to it re-calibrated I have been quoted £60 for this.

Jim and Gabi,

Tapping the glass is a time honored tradition in the aviation world. I suggest continuing this practice in the Porsche environment. It will impress you passengers with your mechanical ability and automotive knowledge.
In the airplane it tends to scare the hell out of the passenegers, especially when you tap on the fuel and oil pressure gauges.

Well, I'll have to give the tapping a try. To further impress my passengers I'll tell them I do it in my airplane too.

Would that also work with police officers? Officer, according to my gauge I wasn't even moving.

If might be the speedo sending unit, I've seen this a lot.

Stephen,

Can you expand on that a bit? Would a bad sending unit 'stick' like this? Can it be serviced or replaced without going to the dealer?

Jim-
Yes, we (Holt Motorsports, Inc.) once had a 96' Cab. with only 19K miles on it and 2 weeks after we sold it to the customer, he came back stating he was experiencing the EXAct same problem.

Off the top of my head, I belive the sending unit is located on the upper left hand side of the trans (I'm positive this is where it is located on the G-50 cars). ON the earlier cars it is held in w/ a 10mm bolt & a small clamp. Simply un-do the bolt, un-plug the sending unit and basically follow the wire. You'll have to jack up the car for this one. It's a pretty simple job.

Hope this helps you out a little bit.

Thanks,
Stephen
