Default Shifter feels "gummy"...

You know how the gearshift lever springs cleanly back to center when you do the L-R neutral motion? ...well now my lever is feeling "gummy" or sticky in its L-R travel. It still drops into neutral fine, and everything shifts as perfectly as before, just that L-R feel is no longer clean, as if the lever drags a bit, and this in either direction. Thoughts?

Sounds like the silicone bushes are shot:

You need four of the ones numbered 4. Whilst you are in there you may as well replace the plastic bushings (#6) and the two silicone bushes on the stabiliser rod. No need to grease the central shaft (#27) but some silicone grease on the bushes will help. The mushy feel can be caused by someone slathering grease over everything!

Ooooh, excellent diagram and specifics here, big thanks, sir!!

Can anyone share if this is an easy/straightforward DIY? Anyone got a writeup or advice? FWIW, I've done the full shiftcoupling replacement/adjustment on the SC, and the nice thing about that whole bit was it's all inside the car. With the 993 I assume it's up on all fours and I'm going in from the bottom? Easy or pita? Thanks, all!

+1 for the FD Motorsports golden rod. I also added FDM short shift kit. Made the shifting crisp and clean. Call and talk to Darrin he can explain what his system can do for you. RRC

Big thanks for that, Andy ...great info there!

I've been outta town for a couple of weeks and did some reading on the goldenrod. I have no desire for a SShift, but eliminating the mush sounds stellar; gonna do it as I ain't no ham-fisted driver and this looks like a very timely upgrade!

One thing I am somewhat unclear on in my reading is which bushings (or whatever parts) will I need if I use the Goldenrod to sub out the stock bits? Will Darin have them or go to Pelican? And any tips from you guys who have installed it would be great, as well ...anything I should be wary of? Thanks, gents!

You will need all the bushes as in the diagram above. The Goldenrod replaces the rear rubber donut with a solid pivot link. It will cause vibration to the stick especially noticeable as you hold the ****. If you continue down the rabbit hole and fit an alloy **** (which is x3 heavier than the stock rubber one at 69 gms) this will be more noticeable still and, IMHO, a real irritation during normal driving. It can also cause buzzing noises.

Again, I counsel you change one thing at a time starting with the bushings and see if it solves the problem and is to your liking. The Goldenrod will remove compliance from the shift mechanism so expect an increase in NVH. Some people notice this, others do not or at least it does not bother them. If you want to change the **** from stock only consider the Delrin versions as they are a) lighter than alloy (147gms vs 220gms) for faster changes and do not act as a pendulum and b) do not become too hot or cold depending on the weather. The 'short shift' replaces item 1 in the above diagram with a similar item having an altered pivot point and fitting one makes no difference to NVH over stock.

Porsche had all these parts in stock but chose not to use them in a road car which speaks volumes!
