Robin 993DX

I am curious to know how many people would be interested in purchasing the Tech Art aluminum gauge face plate?

By design is offering a group buy for the face plates at $420 for the set, $500 including installation with one day turn around.

If there are enough interests I can also do a DIY article on how to do this yourself to save $80.

N. Holloywood speedometer offers their version of the kit for around $450 including installation, but their face plates do not have the idiot lights cut out opening which I have heard is very dim at night and also does not have all the cut outs for the tach markers which is also hard to see at night.

I am currently researching different face plate options right now, Tech Art's face plates have been raved by many so far. I would appreciate any inputs.

I have N. Hollywood Speedo white-face gauges in my car (I had them done in October of 2001). Although not as clear as the stock black-face gauges, I haven't had any visibility problems with the white face gauges.

During the day, they appear white with what appear to be black hash marks around the perimeter. In medium light conditions (with the headlights on) the gauge faces appear silver-gray, and the hash marks are back-lit orangish-red. In complete darkness, the gauge faces appear black and the hash marks appear orangish-red. Since the needles are red, in all but medium light conditions, the contrast is VERY clear. In medium light conditions, the contrast is still good, but not great.

One issue is that, because the backlighting is orangish-red, the red hash marks on the tachometer at 6,700 rpm and above aren't really clear - I just shift at a little past midway between 6 and 7,000 rpm.

Since these issues are inherent in any backlit white or silver-faced gauge, I can't imagine the TechArt gauges being any better in this regard than the NHS gauges.

The real distinction between TechArt and NHS gauges is, as you pointed out, the cutouts for the warning lights. My personal opinion is that, because they appear black when not illuminated, the warning light cut-outs spoil the looks of the white or silver face gauges (particularly the clock) - this is why I went with NHS gauges.

There really is no problem seeing the warning lights with the NHS gauges. The only difference is that, instead of a warning light appearing as an illuminated red square with the text in the box in black, only the actual text is visible (in orangish-red).

The only real tradeoff with the NHS gauges is bleed-through when certain warning lights are on. If, say, the parking brake warning light is on and the interior of the car is dark, there will be bleed-through of the orangish-red light from the parking-brake warning light to the surrounding warning lights. I suspect that Porsche found this bleed-through unacceptable in an $80,000 car and, after determining that the only way to avoid it is to do the cutouts, decided to make only the silver gauges with the cut-outs optional.

I find the trade-off of no cut-outs for a little bleed-through to be more than acceptable. Others won't. Good luck!

Hi Robin, seems a little high for gauge faces. Although they are TechArt it seems with a group purchase you could get them in the High $300's. If that was the case I would definately be in. BTW got the RSR's on today and I am extremely happy with the outcome. I will send the cores back in the next few days.

Just a warning: Be very careful when dealing with By Design. I’ve been involved in a $1700 transaction with them that has been dragging on now for more than three months. I’ve allowed By Design one more week to credit my card. If they do not, I will detail the transaction on Rennlist. I’ll let you know the results either way they go.
