993 Convertible Top
Does anyone have any recommendations for a shop in the Westchester/Fairfield area that is experienced working on 993 convertible tops? Mine is inoperable and two local shops have been unsuccessful is finding the root cause.
thanks!
thanks!
Please describe the problem, e.g. the top fails to unlock, or unlocks but doesn't move. Try manually to unlock the top.
Make sure the hand-brake is engaged, key-on, & the engine is not running. Do you hear any noises when operating the top switch?

Thanks. I’ve confirmed that the transmissions and the wires from the motors are all in good repair. The issue is that when trying to open or closing the roof the units do not stay in synch, which results in grinding. The driver side transmission will also randomly switch polarity and operate in reverse. I’m at a complete loss.

Don't know much about Rennsport Automotive in Bedford, NY ... but they've been around for a long time. There's Fairfield County Motorsports in Fairfield, they are pricey but good. Being right next door to Sloan they definitely geek out air-cooled models. The absolute best (as far as I know) in the area is Auto Associates in Canton, CT. It's a bit of a hike but they are top notch as evidenced by the 20 or so 911s and 914s you'll see lining the parking lot (including mine at the moment!), not to mention the 40 or so more they have in off-site storage. They have a pretty long back-log but they roll deep with the air-cooled knowledge. You can also PM me as well, since I'm in coastal CT and have a bit of experience with this and also have my entire roof off, and have all of the parts just sitting in my garage, and so have spares that we could swap out to try different things - if you're OK with doing some DIY...
Edit: oh yeah, there's also Third Garage in New Milford, CT, and Dan Jacobs in Southbury, CT - but I don't have first-hand knowledge of either of them
It's tough because some of the specialists I've seen seems to focus more on the new cars, while others are more known for tuning and engine building, etc. and that's not what you need.

You may consider changing the top to manual. I have done this on both current and past 993 cabs and IMHO it is the way to go. Good luck and keep us posted.
