Post Wheel/Tire Width and tread wear

I'm almost afraid to ask but....can someone please tell me how one meaures wheel/tire width? Is it located on the wheel and/or tire itself? Also--How do you truly measure tread wear or depth. I purchased my 97 C4 Cab in Feb but do not know how many miles the tires had prior--I've put on about 2K. They "look" fine--just want to be sure I purchase at the right time.

Tires: 225/40/18; 265/35/18 with technology rims
Thanks!

I have found the <a href="http://www.fernblatt.com/longhurst/tyre_bible.html" target="_blank">Wheel and Tire Bible </a> site to be quite informative on this and related subjects.
