Default V-belts

Could someone knowledgeable clarify what size v-belts I need for my 993, please?

Fitted currently are:

9.5 x 760mm LA 999 192 343 50

9.5 x 776mm LA 999 192 338 50

These tally with the Porsche KAT diagram but information on the ‘Net suggests that 10 x 775 is the correct size for the car.

Has there been a change at some time by Porsche? What do you guys in the US fit?

It’s one of the earliest, non-Varioram models. A 1994/L-reg. (UK)

Thanks.

Per the owners manual for my 1996 C4S:

Fan - 9.5x776 La
Alt w Man Gearbox: 9.5x776 la

Only use Original Porsche approved belts.

Hi Lance,
The key is the 9.5-width belt, It is an odd size so the direct replacement will probably need to be gotten at the dealer.
Some have attributed premature belt failure to using a wider 10.0 aftermarket belt.
My view is if the correct 9.5 belt is used and the tension checked/set using an inexpensive tensioning gauge discussed in the below URL page the belts will tend to have a reasonably long service life.
Also, consider the factory pulley update, see the URL document below.
One can verify if the update has already been done on your car by looking at the pulley halves. The original ones are silver stamped steel the updated ones are a casting with a gold chromate finish.

Have the ones on your car at the moment lasted a decent amount of time?

Then fit the same sizes again - doesn't matter what PET says - fit what you know works.

Your for sale post is only accessible to members. If you want a little more traction, you might post it for non-members as well.

Thanks for the replies to my question on v-belts.

Here are some observations/answers based on the responses from this and other sites.

1. I bought the car in 2010 with mileage of 101,000 and the belts were as fitted then. Mileage now is approx. 128,000, and although no problems during that time there is an obvious concern.

2. One of the belts fitted is for a Tiptronic but mine is a manual. The Handbook says both are 9.5 x 776. All a bit confusing. However, more than one source has said fit what is working and ignore the KAT, etc. which seems the best idea.

3. Some parts suppliers only list the wider belt for the car but others list both widths. I have replies of owners using both widths over time without issue.

4. It appears that some special tools are needed to get the correct tension – tools I don’t currently have – so it would seem a roadside fix is not likely, unlike the good old days on in-line Fords and the like I used to have here in the UK. That in itself is also of some concern even with breakdown cover.

5. Unfortunately, I am unable to take up Magdaddy’s offer of belts given I’m in the UK, but a nice thought. Thanks.

So, all in all it would seem my best option is to source like-for-like from a Porsche OPC and get my friendly mechanic to fit them.

Thanks again.
