New white LED 3rd brake light MOD
#17
Keep in mind too that normal voltage is 14 volts, so each LED sees an average of 2.3 volts. What is the exact voltage the LEDs you chose are rated for?
Don't the LEDs need a current limiting resistor anyway, because they can experience thermal runaway?
I'm no EE either, but I have run across such an argument.
Otherwise, this looks like a great project. I considered doing exactly what Coleman did, but ultimately took a different tack, and shoehorned an aftermarket LED light bar in there. It works OK, but Coleman does have the more elegant solution.

Looks good!
I will be releasing an LED conversion in the next couple of weeks for both the 3rd brake light as well as the stop/tail bulbs.
Although lots have been on the market for some time, it's taken an age to find an LED that is truly bright enough to replace the 21w bulbs.
Watch this space!

We'll have some samples ready within (hopefully) the next week or two. I'll put them in my TT and write up a full report. I may even send a set to one of you lucky guys to do the same.

Remember me!
Hi Alan
I am still using your side indicators after you kindly sent me a second set for free (the first broke after 1 year).
If you need an local Euro testers then I'd happily oblige as I wanted to go the LED route for some time.
Regards
Mike

I know it's been a while but I've finally got around to replacing ALL my lights with LEDs!
Stop/Tail, Reverse, ALL indicators, Fog, number plate and the centre console lights.
Oh, not forgetting the 3rd brake light. Nice and easy conversion. I will post pics if anyone's interested?

Rich-
The light looks more "modern" and it comes on quicker.. I used red LED's as somebody on a previous post said that the white LED's through the red lens looks kinda orange.. I looks kinda stock.. Maybe a waste of a mod? But then again, some of my regular bulbs were out, so at least it's back to stock.. We should do Malibu Canyon tomorrow AM..
