Post Newbie Questions

Hello to everyone, I just got a 96 c2 cab, i love it. One question, does anyone have poor distance with the remote when locking or unlocking the doors? I cant stand any further the 5 feet or it wont work. I know its not the battery, i got the new crest and remote. Also i noticed that a thin piece of rubber came off from underneth my spoiler, i believe it is the spoiler wall. Should i get this fixed right away? Thanks for all your help.

Re: the remote. Unfortunately, in my case at least, you need to stand fairly close. With other cars you can be fairly far away, but not with the Porsche remote. Welcome to the board.

Here's the DIY on the spoiler wall:

There's a whole lot of useful information at the site: <a href="http://www.p-car.com." target="_blank">www.p-car.com.</a>

Welcome to the board!

I have the same distance limitation with my 97 cab in reference to the remote. My spoiler dam also ripped, appaently this is a common problem. I was able to apir off the ripped part with an exacto knife leaving me half an airdam. I have no idea if that hurts/helps performance, or has no practical effect. I assume if a half air dam was optimal Porsche would have made it that way to start with. The part costs over a hundred bucks form a dealer and that's without labor. I looked at what was involved in replacing it myself and talked myself out of it. I have read an old post saying you could get this part for less than a hundred bucks but I have been unable to find it at that price. If I had a veeery detailed walkthrough I might try the replacement myself, but for some reason I am a lot more hesitant to "do it myself" on this 97 than I was on my old 86 targa. For, examaple I did all my own maintenance on the 86 but I'm afraid to change the dang oil on this car.

Also does anyone ever notice a sort of "buzzing" coming from in the dash? Its not the fuel pump, it makes the noice after the car is shut off, then slowly fades away? any ideas?

Eureka! Thanks for the walkthrough! Wonder where I can get the air dam cheaper than the dealer cost?

Cobratrf,

It could be a couple of things. It's possible there is something stuck in the ventilation system fan. Sometimes bugs, pieces of leaves, or small rodents work their way into the system and brush against the fan blades.

It also might be related to the radio. The Becker system has a "soft off" (my term), meaning the stereo takes a few seconds to power down and the volume reduces to nothing. If you have a short in the system, upstream of the amplifier, it could be generating a buzzing sound through the speakers. If the sound is coming from both door speakers equally, it could actually sound like it's in the dash, in a twisted two speaker MONO material (vs. stereo) way. The fact is slowly fades away after shutting off the ignition leads me to believe it's either the fan blades coming to a stop against some debris, or the radio shutting down.

Get your head a bit closer and give it a good listen!

Now I know that this sounds a bit odd (and looks really strange) but it works...

Hold the end of the remote against your chin (bear with it) and then press the button.

It sounds nasty but it uses your skull as an aerial and you should find that it more than doubles the distance you can use the remote over.

(Give it a go!) <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

You guys crack me up!

So what if the distance is only about 5 feets?

You're either coming from the car or going to the car so what's the broblem?

Tom,

that sound, is it sort of humming sound (you can barely hear it)? If yes, it's normal, it's blower or something that doesn it for a while after you've shut down the engine, we all have it.

There was a discussion about this earlier, if you do a "search", you'll find it.

Next thing, the gurbling sound from passenger side... Also normal.

Congrats for the new car! Drive it hard!

Will,

I soldered a coat hanger to my remote so I wouldn't look foolish holding it against my face. It's equally effective.

The short remote range is normal. Supposedly, it's by design to limit the ability of a thief or CIA operative to "capture" the signal from a distance, rebroadcast it & steal your car. BTW, WillBank's chin suggestion does work to extend range, but is dependent on the metal content of your head.

The spoiler wall does serve an important role in engine cooling, directing airflow into the compartment. You should fix it - esp. as you head into the summer. I've not done the job, but the DIY on Robin's site looks relatively easy. There are also a number of spoiler wall DIY posts in the archives.

The buzzing dash noise (sounds like a timer or tiny motor) you hear is common and, apparently, nothing to worry about. I noticed the same thing when I first got my car 2+ yr ago, had it checked by the dealer, and as best I can recall was told it's related to the climate control. Mine is NOT a radio/tape/fuel pump sound which is sometimes suggested.

Is this remote work around going to increase my risk of developing a brain tumor? If so, I'm going to dump more money into this car since my shortened lifespan will decrease the amount of money need for my golden years.

No worries there either.. Steve W can get you a new Motronic "brain" when the time comes.

There's probably a direct correlation between remote chin-boost distance and metal fillings in your teeth. Works like a charm on my Land Rover where the remote is part of the key. (Though sometimes I swear I get a tingly feeling in my head...)

Hey, for maximum range why not stick the tapered end of a metal funnel in your mouth while you're at it. (Make sure you're wearing lead pants, too.)

This is starting to sound like a bad late-night TV stunt...

Happy and safe weekend to all!

This is awesome. I always thought I was the only dumb *** looking guy with his key stuck to his chin walking to the car with an arm full of grocery bags.

Of course I don't do that anymore, since my antique 993 actually has a key to unlock the door.
