[quote]O.k. now I'm just trying to figure out where I'm going to mount my calculator to punch those numbers in whilst I'm grabbing 4th to 5th at 100 plus!!

Little bit o' velcro on the back of that Casio, and you can stick it right in the middle of yer steerin' wheel!
You're right, the formulas don't help much for the 2-3 seconds spent in a higher gear, but you still have to get around the rest of the track!

Still interested if anyone has a theory on the extra mph/time gained in changing Vs. time saved not changing?

OK. You are at 90 mph and redline in 3rd gear and have just a bit of straight left before a 3rd gear corner. You upshift to 4th during which the speed drops to 88 mph and you have just enough time to accelerate back to 90 mph 0r even 92. Then you brake and downshift to 3rd.
You lost 2mph vs. staying in 3rd and have something else to worry about and do as you enter the corner. You probably would have been faster staying at 90 mph in 3rd.
On the other hand, if there had been enough straight to get up to 95mph, then you would probably be faster with the upshift and additional downshift, but that would not be 1-2 seconds in the higher gear, it would be more like 5 seconds.
Does that help explain it?
