Post Can Varioram be added to a 1995 993?

Forgive me for my ignorance of the differences in the 1995 and 1996 engine designs but I'm just wondering if there is any way to add Varioram to my 1995 993? If not, when this engine eventually wears out, can I put a varioram engine in my 1995 993?

Yes, Varioram can be added to your engine. I had it done to mine.

Hi Phil,
Mind if I ask you what was involved? and was it a difficult project? or more likely, was it worth it?

just wondering....

Thanks.

It was not difficult, but did involve changes to the wiring harness, if I remember correctly. Hard to say if it was worth it by itself, because I had it done along with the 3.8L Porsche kit upgrade. There were two upgrade kits offered by Porsche, one for the non-varioram engine and one for the varioram engine. I went for the varioram engine 3.8L upgrade, and my Porsche dealer found a varioram kit from a Porsche tuner whose customer turbocharged his car. Got it dirt cheap...

Thanks Phil...and I assume that the ECU would have to be changed as well, right?

Several people have added varioram to ‘95’s. There is a solution that does not involve the ECU or harness. Get one of those devices that trigger a voltage at a particular RPM. The device has a connection to the coil to measure RPM. You “program” it to apply 12V to a lead at a particular RPM. I think there are only a couple of leads required for varioram. Attach these leads to the varioram to get the various valves to open/close at the appropriate RPM. It sounds more complicated than it is.

Most people who have added varioram say it was more expensive and trouble than it’s worth. There is a significant weight penalty with the aluminum manifold over the black plastic one.

PK,
Yes, I forgot the ECU was changed as well, but this was needed for the 3.8L kit upgrade anyway.
