RS Tuning say that the CTR concept of twin intercoolers situated in the side does NOT work. According to Rheinhold Schmirler (who used to be Ruf's chief mechanic) They pinched the idea from Porsche who had tried it in the late '80s and rejected it. There may be an element of sour grapes here however I owned an '89 CTR and Ruf told me that the intercoolers would get soaked quickly if the full 1.2 bar boost was used extensively. The 996tt set up is completely different.

Just an FYI -- the car is still available. I think the auction winner flaked. My buddy went down to look at it. Said its wicked fast, and the interior is clearly handbuilt.
Problems, however, are that the car has been driven hard. Hard enough to break camber plates, have the engine opened up and currently 2nd gear is grinding badly. At least the owner is fairly upfront about all of this.
Anyway, it was enough to scare off my friend. But some of the rest of you might not mind picking it up and spending some extra $$$ to fix her. Still seems like a great deal. Just make sure to get a thorough PPI.

The problem with the gear box is this. The car has an EKS system, which has an electronic servo that operates the clutch. It was sticking during your friends test drive. The clutch system will be bleed to eliminate this problem. As far as the camber plates breaking: this is not a major problem as a mater of fact it is good that they are all new and have been replaced. The roads in LA are very rough on a car and when traveling at RUF speed and going over some of these freeway bumps things happen. fortunately they make parts that are replaceable. If you want to go fast, this is it.

On such an exclusive, highly regarded, and expensive car, wouldn't it make sense to put things in order before selling? I would imagine that it could then bring a significantly higher price which would offset the expense and make a buyer much more comfortable. Just a thought.

Ruf has such a car in his showroom. The odo shows "85" and it has right hand drive. It is silver / dark green. This huge wing is hollow, indeed. It has an air-inlet at the front edge and directs the airflow onto the intercoolers. Pretty similar like 996s do, except that they pick up the air stream from behind the doors.
Best regards,
Felix

Adam,
I exchanged voice-mails with Neil (the owner in San Diego) in June 2004. At that point, his RUF was not sold yet. The listing had expired then, and I have not seen anything else listing this car for sale.
