Ok - so pervious owner made some mods to the back wall lining (rear panel behind folding rear seats). I am trying to determine original factory configuration.
I have 1998 Targa with interior code YA (cashmere/black full leather). Additionally I have option code 981 which corresponds (I believe) to leather dash, console, doors).
Current rear panel is all black vinyl. I believe original was cashmere bottom and black upper panel. I am unsure whether this was originally vinyl or leather.
Does anyone out there have possession, or direct knowledge of the YA interior code and Option code 981 WRT rear panel color(s) and material?
I am not 100% sure but YA would be Black Full Leather interior. I had a 968 with YA interior and it was totally black leather. My '96 993 has full leather seats Cashmere with black trim and its code is LG. Vinyl doors, dash and console. 982 supple leather front and rear seats

Thanks Steven - I am confident that the YA code for a 993 has the cashmere seats, doors, and carpet with the black dash, all in leather as that is documented on numerous sites. I am having trouble determining what the YA code and the 981 option code say about the rear shelf.
On your 993, is the rear panel cashmere behind the seats and black on the upper panel? If so, I assume all vinyl (leatherette)?
Hi Baliboy,
I would always do the back shelf in vinyl for durability no matter what the code says. Leather shrinks especially when exposed to the sun. I have seen how this pulls loose or even distorts interior panels.

Here are photos of my '96 Cashmere and Black, code LG. Door, console, and side panels are vinyl, front and back seats full leather. I would see if your local "friendly" Porsche dealer's service rep would down load a copy of the Porsche Central Service Report, it will have the codes and brief description. Or get the detailed option code list available from Pervy who is on the 933 forum. Both may have details on which materials were used.
Option 981 "Leather dashboard and door panels"
I looked through the three dozen or so leather option codes for our cars and none speak of a rear deck leather option. The codes seem very specific and comprehensive, so if a rear deck option was available I would think it would have been described as such. A rear deck option other than black would reflect in the rear glass diminishing visibility. Also leather is problematic as I mentioned above so these options may have simply not been offered.

Thanks Andy. I agree that the vinyl will be more long lasting. I was curious how the car came from the factory. If it was originally leather, that may explain why it was redone. There is most every possible color combination for the rear shelf in the Porsche parts catalog in both vinyl and leather. I would assume colors were available to match interior colors as options.
In addition, I am confused by the YA interior code and the option code 981. They seem redundant, but I have seen cars with YA and not 981, so I can only assume there is some difference.
I do have the “as built” VIN sheet, but it does not detail specifically what is leather (other than dash/door inserts) and what is not.
