Yes it's difficult, but you were on the right track. Definitely remove the driver's side heat tube to get your arm up there. Also, there's a black rubber plug on the driver's side that's designed to allow you to remove the tape you have to use to hold the release arm in place when you install the transmission to the engine. If you remove that you can easily tell if the slave cylinder end is in the cup in the release arm.

It would be great to have a picture of where this little black plug is and what a properly aligned release arm looks like on the DIY.

Excellent pics Jason thanks for the link. I wish I had known that when I replaced my slave cylinder. Of course I was busy growing a third skinny arm starting half way up my second one so I could reach in there without dropping the engine...
