Default 96 993 center brake light not working.....replace rear glass???!!!

Just got my car back from a routine service, the tech told me that my rear center brake light is not working, To fix the problem I would need to have the rear glass replaced........ That just seems excessive to solve a connectivity issue. Is this my only option? Has anyone found a work around to fix this problem? I got Tore's LED kit for my signal lights and I opted for the rear fog light brake kit for added visibility, I sure am glad that at least I have a back up.

I would still like to fix the center light and not have to replace the rear glass.

thanks,

Mike

I am assuming it's still attached. The painted cover pops right off. Tore sell's an LED replacement for this as well. Verify that the signal lines are still carrying current and the ground is grounded while you have that cover off. Simple work. No need to replace rear glass. If it needs to be bonded to the glass, PM me, I have an unused Porsche glass bonding kit.

After a little digging I found this repair link: http://p-car.com/diy/glass/
this should give me a good place to start.

I had this problem not long after I purchased the car in 2002. I used the fix at http://p-car.com/diy/glass/ and have never had another problem with it.

Ditto. Did this fix a dozen years back without issue, still working fine.

I had this problem years ago, it is likely a broken electrical connection somewhere, if you can located, and repair, which is what I did, that will save you $$$$. I am a bit handy with electrical stuff, so it wasn't very challenging. visual inspection had me focus on the connection that goes through the glass from the light into the car. I was able to push some wires through the opening, which I resealed with silicone after I confirmed a good electrical connection. I used heavier gauge wire than stock, so while it made the hole bigger, I also have not had any issues either.

Good luck!

I just performed the repair of my 3rd brake light following the p-car.com instructions. One thing I would change is to NOT CUT The WIRES from the outside as per instruction. I would have saved myself hours of agony if I simply unsolder the connector from the inside and then pull the wire and resolder directly to the wires. Trying to tin the tip and then fish thought the glass in a L bend was painful......
