Post Oil Change Recommendation

Wondered if I could get some advice on oil changes for a 993TT, 1996. The car had the oil and filters changed about a year ago by the PO. Since then it has done about 350 miles. Do you think it needs changed again this year even with so few miles since the last change? The oil that was put was the Porsche recommended oil. 15W/40, I believe. It's not a big cost but if it's just throwing away $200, not much point.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, you should change oil at least once a year if the car is driven less than 5k miles.

I think I'd follow the recommendation in the owner's manual on this one. It probably says something like change oil and filter every 15k miles or once a year, whichever comes first. In this case the once a year came first, as it does with my car every year. I can't say for sure that the oil really needs changing, but it would bring me at least $200 in cognitive comfort. And Marco, please try to get out more.

Do you guys use synthetic oil in 993s? If not, I imagine I would want to change the oil every 6 months.

Porsche has been filling their engines with synthetic oil since mid-92. I think most people have been using Mobil 1.

Marco,

Why are you worried about a 200 dollars when your car cost what 100k plus.

So, change the oil and drive the bloody thing.

I'll join the others - change your synthetic oil & filters yearly. Oil degrades over time - as do gasoline & brake fluid! Other components (seals, gaskets, electrical contacts, etc.) can also deteriorate from lack of use. Be kind to your TT - take it out for regular exercise.

Thanks for the advice, all, both technical and behavioural!!

I should explain that I bought the car at the end of January this year and, as you all know, winter in Chicago with snow, ice, salt etc is not a nice time to drive, especially not a TT. The weather has just cleared and the salt seems to have gone so I'll be taking the car for some regular exercise! Imagine the frustration at only looking at in the garage since the end of January!!

Thanks again all and hope this helps explain that I'm not nutty!!
