Default Sooo......

Let me make sure I understand. I have the brace in hand, I have an early MY95 with a low VIN and I can install this brace no problems or worries?

Hope that is the case and if so will install ASAP before the 18" wheels go on....

- Get the front of the car slightly off the ground (or drive it to the edge of a slight drop-off).
- Take the plastic under-pan off.
- Undo the two factory Allen bolts.
- Bolt bracket in place with longer supplied bolts (the part number should be visible).

At this point, 13 minutes will have elapsed. Torque the bolts properly, re-attach the plastic under-pan and be done with it.

From all the reading I did, the VIN number thing really did not seem to matter. The brace will fit. My '95 has a build date of 7/94. The brace fit fine and a nagging steering column creak disappeared.

Default Won't Fit.....

Tried to install the brace over the holiday and it will not fit at all. There is a power steering hard line near the left mounting point for the brace that interferes with it. Tried all possible combinations, not gonna work.

Guess this goes back to the earlier discussion re: some early MY95s not able to use the brace. Assume there is a different hard line in this location for the VINs that will work?

If so, can someone post the PN?

My 1995 is VIN ...0093, which is well before yours. The steering rack brace fit my car just fine. Further, I've never heard a single mention of the brace not fitting a car.

Do you have any pics you can show us?

Sumtoc,
A quick search on Rennlist using the words "steering brace" returned pages of dialogue discussing this, with no issues reported regarding fitment.

Perhaps the following pictures will help (brazenly stolen from a few of these older threads...)

Hey everyone, please help me. My new to me late model '95 has 18" turbo look wheels installed by a prior owner. Before I knew about this issue I drove the car like you drive a 993. I drove over a variety of curvey roads at varying speeds. Everything feels perfect. I noticed nothing out of the ordinary.

After reading about this I crawled under the front of the car and the floor pan obstructs my view. Is there a simple way I can tell if the brace was installed without removing the pan? The issue is that I am out of town pretty much until an upcoming DE car control clinic. I'm hoping that there is a way I can figure this out one way or another when I am home next weekend.

Thanks!

Mike,
The plastic under pan completely covers the area (I think). It takes all of 2 minutes to remove.

Or you could Dremel an access hole through the spare tire wheel well.

The front cover comes off with 7 plastic nuts and 2 metal bolts. All are 10mm. The plastic nuts with the wider washer (and there are only 2 of them) go on the wings in the rear of the cover. Easy to remove and reinstall....

Hi, there does seem to be a lot of misinformation around concerning the brace and 18 inch wheels. I wanted the wheels so I bought the brace and no it wouldn't fit my car. So, I didn't bother but did fit the wheels. That is until the rack started to leak and I had to change it. An opportunity to reasess the brace. With a bit of out of the box thinking the brace was fitted but it was certainly not a straightforward job (car was registered in '94 in the UK). It was certainly not a 15 minute job as one of the 'unions' was in the way. But I would like to point out that the original, supplied with the car, owners' manual mentions the 18 inch wheel option and gives tyre pressures etc and absolutely no warnings or recommendations about fitting the brace. I can't help feeling that there is a product liability issue here somewhere and our dear german friends are being, shall we say, over cautious. Phil

Excuse me for digging up this old post. Does this mean ALL 96's and up came with the brace installed from Porsche? Regardless if the car came with 17's or 18's?

I'd have a look at mine to see if its installed - but it is in the shop getting a rebuilt steering rack... My car came originally with 17's cups but I just picked up some 18's...
