I just heard a blip in between snoozes this am about severe crackdown on I80 with new laser radar.
Anyone have the real scoop on the laser radar, or if they were using standard Ka in reality?

Yeah, the big crackdown on I80 was only for yesterday and was between the Berkeley corridor up thru Fairfield. 5MPH over the speed limit will supposedly get you a ticket.
The new radar is more narrower so that they can focus on one vehicle at 1000 feet.
Hope this helps and drive safely.

The problem with laser enforcement is it is instant on. In other words, when your radar detector tells you that it is detecting laser, it's too late. And those units that are sold to fool the laser units are a sham.

As an engineer I would go to court and argue that the officer
was mistaken on indentity if there were any surrounding traffic
at all. If you are alone then your a dead duck. But still if you're in
a traffic flow I bet you could get away with the multiple target
arguement. a 993 with no front plate is gonna be a slicker target
than a Ford 150

OG,
This is the exact reason why they're using this new radar, to eliminate the multiple target argument in court. The laser beam is way more narrower and is capable of extending up to 1000 ft. (i.e. singling out individual vehicles.)

My understanding is that is the basic difference between all the laser/radar...X band is big wide that got everyone in one beam, so hard to tell; K was narrower; Ka narrower, but still relatively wide. I've heard laser is only 18" wide by the time it gets to your car, and since laser is so directional, very hard to pick up unless you happen to get a bounce off someone. And yes, anything jamming anything is illegal in CA at least.
So how widespread is the laser use? I live on the radar detector on I80, whether in 993 or in the Celica...I'd hate to think that is going by the wayside. Damn insurance companies providing the cops with the equipment...talk about a conflict of interest, considering how much they make off of a ticket.
Oh, and Tom, yes, Auto X on Sunday. I thought at one point it was Sat?? Did they change it?
