Getting tires mounted without damaging wheels?

Hey guys. I have been using shops with Hunter equipment (9700's, etc.) for quite awhile.
Particularly with our 18" wheels, the techs usually have to use "the bar" to get the tire beads over the rim as the Hunter machine is rotating the wheel. This is where most scratches come from. Also, the four or five (six?) nylon blocks used to scoot the bead over the rim can have grit on them.
My best bet has been having the tires mounted over the BACK of the wheel. That is, the wheel is seated on the Hunter device upside down. Obviously, this only works with wheels with large openings (e.g., hollow-spokes).
