Cool Best way to make your car go fast!

Well, maybe not the best way, but this has been a fun 2 weeks since I installed the Fabspeed supercups. All the threads on this board lately about mods, getting every last ounce of hp out of the 993 with exhaust, chips, intakes, lightening, etc... and I thought I would bring up the supercups as a way to satisfy your hunger for speed and add to the fun factor of driving the 993.

About 2 weeks ago I installed the new version of the supercups and all I can say is WOW. These pipes really rock! They are loud, they do have resonance between 2400-2900 RPM but boy do they transform the car. I feel like I've got the best of both worlds between sophisticated German engineering and brute force American muscle car. Of course I am not going any faster with this exhaust, (rumor has it that you do get 5-10hp and lose about 30 lbs. off the rear) but you FEEL like you are going faster. The sound is very deep and has the coolest chain saw deep growl sound I have ever heard on a Porsche. This is the newer version of the supercups, which is essentially the same as the older version, but with different baffles that are welded in. The baffles are no longer removable. I have heard the old ones and these sound somewhat different, a little more subtle, but not much. At the same time they have a serious quotient of the "chain saw" effect that sounds so good on a sports car.

When driving along side a cement divider and opening it up, the sound ricochets and echoes off the divider - sounds great and you feel like you are going fast, but in fact you are doing the usual. Ironically, the exhaust helps to keep the speed down since you are more concerned with going fast.

Anyway, this may be a more cost effective way to enhance the fun factor without spending tons of money. The only other engine mod I am considering doing is the Steve W. chip. The reason I don't like the idea of the chip is that I know the performance improvement is marginal and you will get used to the extra torque/hp very quickly. Within a couple of weeks you won't be able to tell that the car has any more power than it did pre-chip. But I will probably do the chip anyway, I just can't help myself. Maybe I can hold off until next year.

Have fun!!!

Thanks... don't think I will ever grow tired of it. The 993 is a modern day classic. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

But what do the neighbors think?
And do you set off car alarms in a parking garage? <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

When you take it easy on the gas driving in nice quiet neighborhoods, etc... keeping the revs to 2k or so, it is not so loud. Just a nice deep low rumble. I would normally never drive 35mph in 4th gear but the car is quite capable without lugging. This allows you to cruise through the quiet areas or past a police cruiser with low RPMs and not causing too much noise.

When you step on it, I'm sure there are raised eyebrows, but who cares? I'm sure I could set off alarms if that was my intention, but haven't tried that one yet.

Question is: do you still have baffles?

I took mine off after a day, sound (with them) was too much like V8 os something like that.

W/out them, it's closer to that original 'Porsche scream' and like you said, at high rpms, it's just soo sweet! (actually, it's more mean than sweet, but you knw what I mean).

Although, IMO, my 2.7 911 still sounds a bit better (it has really loud exhaust), tone is higher. That is, naturally because the engine is smaller, 3.6 is not so small so you don't get that high scream.

Anyway, I love both of those sounds!

I have the new style supercups with the baffles welded in. The sound is somewhat V8 like, but I really like it. Wouldn't want the car to be any louder, I couldn't be happier with the sound.
