Talking Stock Shock Life?

I have been thinking about lowering my 97C4S for a while and have read a bunch on this site. When it becomes time I'll do some searching.

But, the question I have now is how long can I expect the stock shocks to last before they should be replaced. This would be a great opportunity to sell it to my better half. I have the standard suspension.

Thanks Guys,

-Skip

993 standard shock life ranges from

50 miles - 100,000 miles...... Depends on the driver and road condition.

So in addition to Silver Bullet's great reply, Here is one more you can add (in case if your wife is a number cruncher)

Look, honey I have no idea how long these shocks may last, they may go out in matter of weeks, and then I would end up have to pay twice of the labor charge. Since the only way to replace the shocks is to completely take off the suspension so I will need to get another 4 wheel alignment.

Basically spend twice as much money if I just replace the shocks from the start....

Good luck!

Let us know if that line works or not....

LOL! Even on a garage queen, they won't last that long.

Mine recently went bad. Because the labor to change shocks is paid already, as Robin says, I chose this opportunity to improve the suspension and lower the car 1" as it should have been when I bought it. Much safer. I explain all costs in cents per mile, and I keep that number reasonable by driving this gem as often as possible.

Question

What is a sure fire way to tell if your shocks have gone south?

Other than my honey riding in the passenger seats whining?

I have 43K on standard shocks and some days I think they are gone and others feel just fine.

TIA

Rides like it was on rails, ie no give on riding over road cracks. CD player skips. Corners in sweepers like it was suspended on jelly, ie takes an initial set on turn-in, then bounces back and forth. It may pass the static bounce test, ie does not keep bouncing when you push down on the bumper, but this does not indicate it is ok at speed. Your confidence in spirited driving will drop as all this happens. The honey will whine till you get a Lexus or Benz, so this is not a valid data point.

Thanks for the serious and sarcastic opinions. I have about 43k on them and was just wondering.

The more I read on Rennlist the more I want to change them out and keep up with you guys.

Later...

LOL! That's a great description, Terry. My car was doing that at about 25k miles.

Cheap Shot, and you too Pin. You guys should know I need an excuse when guys like Greg pass me in the corners.

In some seriousness now, as far as I can tell, my car does have the original shocks, but it does not exhibit any of the characteristics:

[quote]Corners in sweepers like it was suspended on jelly, ie takes an initial set on turn-in, then bounces back and forth.

as described so eloquently by Terry. And believe me, I would know, as much time as I spend at the track. And before I get 20 emails asking me what the hell is wrong with me and why dont I change them, let me say that my car is cruising down the road named "Race Only", so it makes no sense for me to pay $3k for a trick PSS9 system now only to change it out to triple adjustable Motons or Penske's in a years time.

So until that happens, I am happy scraping the paint off the door handles in the slower corners.

E. J.

PS - if she ever does start to exhibit the dangerous characteristics Terry described, of course I would change them on the spot.

Skip,

I don't know if my experience is entirely representative, but my shocks are definitely getting a bit mushy at 16,000 miles. Not horrible, but not as composed as they used to be.

I've done 6 track days with the car, in addition to using it as a daily driver.

I remember changing the stock shocks on my first car, a 1985 Honda Civic, at about 20,000 miles as well. I'll probably upgrade to the PSS-9s on the 993 later this summer.
