I must say that over the years I have seen some horrendously wrecked 993's and people have "walked" away from the crashes. In general, I do not disagree with your comment (self-selection); however, I do think the 993 is one of the safest vehicles on the road once something has gone wrong. If you add in the active safety issues (handling, brakes, steering, etc) I would be surprised if there are any better cars on the road (some may equal the 993, but not better). <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" />

Hank Cohn,

Interesting story, glad you're ok. Yes, I'd like to see the (sad) pictures.

Curtis,
Certainly the HLDI results should not be used to draw too many conclusions, but I think they do provide worthwhile information. A number as low as that scored by the 993 must mean something. Also, on the '95-'97 report, the GMC Suburban 1500 and the Chevy Suburban 1500 get exactly the same rating (43). As for the other Suburbans, one is a 4X4 and the other is a 2500. Even so, all the Suburbans have ratings very close to each other. Throughout the lists, cars that are identical except for badges (e.g. Chevy/Pontiac of the same model) generally have ratings quite close to each other. One reason the 911 wasn't on the list until recently is, I think, because there wasn't enough statistical information to get a "statistically significant" rating. Now, apparently, there is enough info to get it on the list. Unlike the crash tests, these ratings are based on what has actually happened on the roads. I do think driver type is significant -- I think the Camaro/Firebird/Mustang horrible ratings are at least partially due to the number of 17 year-olds flying around (and off) the roads in them. None of us should get carried away by any statistic, this one included. But again, the 993's rating is SO good, it must mean something.
