Chunking of new tires...

I have a set of Michelin N1 Pilot sports and they are at the wear bars and the inside edge is bald (negative camber). I bought a set of Michelin PS2s but do not want to ruin them at the track. I have a track event about 4 hrs away and am afraid to take the tires I currently have as I do not want to get stranded from the inside edges wearing down to the chords. But, I also do not want to ruin 4 brand new tires by chunking them. What do you guys think the possibliity of chunking the tires is?

I think it depends on the weather and your driving. I used new SO3's for DE (both my wife and I driving) on a day in the mid-60's with some rain in the morning. We also used them again the next day when it was mid- to upper-70's. We had no problems with the tires gettiing too hot and chunking (it was our first DE so we were not pushing the limits).

Along with weather and temp, it also depends on the tires, your driving style and how tight the track is. I used to do DEs with an Alfa on Yoko street tires (A008s ...fabulous tire for its time!). Then when I got the 993, I did a few with Yoko AVS Sports. No chunking in either case. But I HAVE seen some bad chunking with others running street tires, though I don't remember brands/models.
If you're really concerned about cording the old tires, you could remount them on the rims, left to right. I've heard of some doing this for R Compounds to try and even the wear and increase usable life. It'll probably cost you about $15-20 a tire so I don't know if this is really worth it for just one event, but it's an option![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

The problem with that is that now the bald part of the tire is on the outside edge. When at the track most of the load is going to be on the outside edge.

IMO, I probably would and reverse the old tires by dismounting them - not knowing the track expect one side is going to get all/most of the wear If reversing is is no possible would use the new tires as safety comes first.
