Post Racing Pads - Squeak like mad! Any ideas??

I have Hawk Racing pads on my 993 and they are nearly new but they squeak like I am driving a 81 Ford Escort. Has anyone else had problems with brakes squeaking? They will squeal intermittently even when the brakes are not applied. Please help I need to do something about this before I go crazy. Thanks for any input. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Ah,the joy of running racing pads on the street...
They will all do this, the more wear, the more squeal. I cannot comment on the cause (something to do with the fit I believe) I once applied anti squeal compound to the back of my pagids orange pads and that seemed to quiet them down but the liquid material seemed to gum up the pistons on my big reds and wont try that again. I now put the pagids in for track use only as they are LOUD.

Thank you for the reply, I am really annoyed with the way they sound. I am buying OE pads and having them installed this week I hope to see a big difference as far as "SQUEAL!" Nice looking car buy the way. Your car looks wide do they make a non turbo wide body from the factory? Thanks

I have KFP Magnums in both my 993 and my A4q. The Porsche squeals so loudly that it is sometimes embarassing. Gets an awful lot of attention. The Audi only squeals a little. Why, I don't know. These pads have been great on the track and have been very rotor friendly. They have also greatly improved the feel of the Audi brake pedal. I was going to apply some high temperature silicon to the back of the pads but am concerned about "gumming up" the pistons.

GTR,
No wide body, Techart wing, bumper and side skirts make it look a little wider than normal. Someday I'll get around to posting some pics of the car as it has most of the stuff that people always ask about (Carbon interior, alum gauges,Recaro sport seats,PSS9's,roll bar ect.)
RAK,
I would not use sticky stuff on the back of the pads, I forget the brand anti squeal stuff that I tried, it was red, I would not use it again as I spent a hour picking the dried material out of my brake pistons. Maybe a lighter coat would have worked but I figured loud squeal, liberal application of anti squeal material!

There is a solution to the squeal produced on racing pads such as Pagid and Hawk Blues.....heat em up to about 600 deg F.....that'll cure the problem! smiling

Red face

EVERY track pad I have tried has squealed like a stuck pig on the street. Considering that I have to switch between track and street tires before & after driving to/from a track event, resp., I spend another 15 minutes and swap pads.

I used to hit the track brake pad backing plates with some spray-on CRC anti-squeal goo. However, since they squeal like a stuck pig anyway, I gave up on this step.

Thumbs up

I've been using the Frioto DS2000 pads for a few months now and I'm happy with the performance. I've run the car at 2 track events (Thunderhill and Laguna Seca) with these pads and I've noticed very little fade. Best of all.....no squeal on the street as long as I don't let the rotors/pads build up too much brake dust. Good luck.

Thank you for all of the information, has anyone had problems even with the OE pads? I am switching to the OE pads for the street and will swap for the track. Please don't tell me the stock pads squeak too. Thanks again for the replies.

No, the stock pads are nice & quiet.

Mark, I think you're referring to 'Ferodo' pads in the DS2000 compound.

GTR,

OEM pads work great and are squeal free (I even use them for the track). Ditch the metal backing plate and the little disks and you'll have an easier time swapping pads between track and street. Also, I've found that hosing all the brake dust off the rotors after a track weekend helps keep the street pads quiet.

gtr, a pad change is cake on these cars and all the 4-piston caliper porsches for that matter. I noticed your post said "having them changed" you could do it yourself in 15min/wheel and save the cash for track time! just a thought,

I will try and change them myself, just to get used to the quick change for the track. I guess I am a little more cautious with the Porsche than my old C5. I still can't get over what a huge difference between the Porsche and my C5 this car is so much more fun to drive.

The only good thing about my brake squeal is my wife has quit driving my car!

CarboTech Super Streets (I believe they are cryogenically treated Hawks) squeal bad once they get warm.
