Default oil leak

I noticed some oil on the garage floor near the front of the Porsche. I was expecting the steering rack to be leaking Took the cover off the diff and steering rack and found the steering rack to be completely dry. I checked the boots on the steering rack and they were dry inside and out. The oil was covering the hose as you can tell from the pix.

The only thing I've done recently was to change the oil in the diff. Checked all around the diff and everything was dry. Does the diff have a vent on the top where I can't see/feel? I may have overfilled the diff when changing the oil and this could explain the drip if there's a vent on the top.

Any help appreciated.

Hose the area down with spray electric motor/electronic cleaner and wait for the oil to return to ID its source.

Overfilling would be my guess, especially if it didn't slowly come on. Diff seals will present with a progressive drip.
How much was in the tray?
Do you have the procedure for checking the level? (I'm a C2 so no idea)

Default follow up

Reply to the questions....

No, the brake fluid not overfilled. No brake work done recently.

The only way to check the fluid in the diff is to take the fill plug out and check the level with the finger dipstick. I'd say 3 oz or less in the tray. Diff seals appear dry.

The hose runs from one end of the steering rack to the other and those ends were dry.

As per the suggestion, cleaned the hose, wiped everything down and buttoned it up. Next step is to drive it once or twice and see how much fluid has dripped and where it's coming from. I have the suspicion that when I do check and it's wet, I won't be any farther ahead than I am now. Couldn't pinpoint the leak at first and not sure if a follow up inspection will pinpoint the leak. I will be positive and say....yep, that'll tell me where it's coming from. Keep fingers crossed and I'll let everybody know. I posed the question to the list just in case others have run across the problem.

Thanks all for the input. It is appreciated.

I had a leaky shock absorber on the front that had me worried for a while, thought it was the steering rack. Might be worth a look.

Long shot, but assuming you have a TT, check your clutch reservoir. I seem to remember a slave cylinder malfunction can cause fluid to back up and overflow that reservoir in the frunk. NA cars don't have this reservoir.

Do you have a picture of the fluid? It should be easy to tell the difference between differential oil and brake fluid/power steering fluid. Additionally, the differential oil will have a distinct smell/yellowish color.

+1
wick some up on a white paper napkin to see what color and give it a sniff.
the pros would probably taste it as well but that’s not my cup of tea.

Default Found the oil leak

Last week I posted about an oil leak near the steering rack. Cleaned it off and drove it today but all that happened was the hose was wet and there was the leak.

So here's what I did. had the front end up on jackstands. The engine was started and a helper moved the steering from stop to stop. The oil leak appeared in the hose. Now it's an easy fix. Take the hose off and go to the local hydraulic hose shop and have them replace and crimp the hose and re-use the original Porsche ends. There's a pix of where the leak was.

Thanks to all for your input.

How do you remove that hose? I swear your picture looks just like the underside of my car.
