DJF1 and kadeer, check your PM boxes, I sent a diagram that may help you know what Danny is talking about.

good luck,

Max this is not the diagram that the part should be in. I'm pretty sure it is inside the gearbox. If you have a diagram of the inside please send it over.

Kadeer,
I would be careful driving the car with your described problems. Again, the 'same type of thing' happened to me in my race car gearbox. I would lose a string of gears and very hard to shift. We opened the gearbox and dicovered the shifter forks had loosened and were out of alignment. Biggest thing you have to worry about if this is your problem, is engaging 2 gears at the same time. When you engage the next gear, the loose shifter fork will not disengage one gear prior to engaging the other...not good.

Why does all this happen at the track and not on the street? Does anybody know?

In my case it was breaking loads that would cause it. On the street you do not experience the same loads while cornering, braking etc so it dod not happen. My first instinct said heat but it is far from it.

Dave, Thanks for the heads up on driving it as it stands. I need to take to the shop tommorrow and I will double clutch to make sure the two gears are not engaged.

Any idea guys what kind of labour I am looking at to open gear box?

Danny,
Your symtoms are exact, I noticed too the problem gets worse on hard braking, I could not understand how this was related to clutch/gears/transmission but that how it was behaving.

I droped the car to the mechanic today, he will test drive and let me know.
I did tell him to look for the part the Danny mentioned first for fault.
When Danny finds the part name I will forward it to the mechanic.

My mechanic is going to try adjustment without opening the gear box first, which he claims you can do externally. Mentioned some ball and spring.

Sorry for the delay Kadeer. Working on a ship the sat communication sometimes is not easy... At any rate I spoke to my mychanic today and he said that the part is the "shift rod lockout" . He suggested that also that a pro look at the gearbox inside.
Good luck!

I had basically this same problem on my car, which is for the most part a track car. Can't remember what exactly it ended up being, but doing the external adjustment, which we tried, was a total waste of time. It was something internal--shift fork or some fairly minor part. I would as has been said by others try and avoid driving it this way so you don't damage more expensive things in the gearbox.

I just got a call from the mechanic and he found lot of metal when he did the transmission fluid, so he is thinking of synchro related problem.
Did you guys get any metal filling in the fluid?

He also recommended I change the synchros/clutch while he has it open. I have 60K on the car, all original.
Looks like its going to cost me a lot.
What should I expect for such a job, clutch replacement and synchros.

Actually we found a lot of metal as well but it was the spider gear not the syncros. Be very carefull not to be taken on this deal! It is going to cost you an arm and a leg ( over 3K) for all these jobs!!!
Clutch at 60K may not be a bad idea again its your budget. If you go for syncros better get steel syncros and if you decide for these big jobs regearing is a great option.
Again beware and good luck...

Kadeer - lots of metal too! If you remember in my earlier reply, the metal is what caused my shifting problems (although I believe some metal in the fluid is normal). The potential good news is, my mechanic was going to replace my clutch (60k also), but called me and said unless I just wanted to spend money, the clutch looked fine and probably had another 30-40k miles left. I was going to do the LWF, but since the clutch was fine and I was already spending $ I hadn't planned on, I passed for now.
